I have a 1TB my book Home edition that I bought around 9month ago maybe more.
As you can imagine I have TONs and TONs of stuff on there. I mean anything from Music/pictures/movies and shits like that. Some downloaded from internet some are pics I took. Some stuff that even I dont know how da fuck I got them.
So anyway today I turned the thing on and basically it didn't get recognized by the computer. I totally freaked out when I retried and nothing happened. But anyhow after restarting and unpluging everything I got it back working to normal again.
I was wondering if anyone have heard of these things ever just going nuts by themselves?
Have you ever heard anyone having problem with these and loosing their Datas?
What are the chances compare to an internal HDD?

I have heard a lot of problems with external hard drives nowadays. A lot of the problems have been stemming from shitty power components in the drives, while another thing has a lot to with the fact many do not have fans anymore. So if you use a fan-less one you shouldn't keep it on 24/7. I have an old La Cie external that is 8 years old now and works perfectly fine while last year I had my internal fail after 3 years but I have heard recently of numerous people having 3-9 month old external drives failing...
also having your external randomly go nuts, that has happened to me maybe two times so yes it does happen and no you shouldn't be too worried about it if it comes back on and seems to work fine/good transfer speeds. But if it starts bogging down and having troubles connecting to your comp constantly or you start hearing clicking noises then it is time to back up files asap.

Make back-ups on dvd while u still can, and for those who it is too late, there are a lot of nice softwares that can actually get your shit back 95% of the time.
