Dunno about US national wire transfers, but mine (international) wire transfer took 7 days.

Also, it took about 5-6 days for them to deposit all the money into my poker account, but it may be faster now that the ME is close.

As for Day 1 filling up - it is pretty likely that Day 1D is going to be filled up the first, then 1C and so on. So unless he gets a confirmation beforehand that he gets to start according to his prefference, I think he should come to Vegas for Day 1A or 1B the latest.

and yeah, even in the US it's an international bank wire, i'm with a major bank and they take 5-9 days on avg.

i really think he should try to come up with 5k for safety/whatever reasons and just cash out 5k via moneygram which he can pick up at places in vegas i believe.
