Weekly tourneys dead?

The LP weekly tournaments were a very popular happening in the beginning of liquidpoker, 40-50 entrants for a single tournament were not an exception. The site has come a long way from then and now we have many times more visitors. You would expect the tournaments to be even bigger then, but lately we have trouble pulling in 10-15 players. Today was the worst failure ever with 3 players.

So my question is, why don't you play the weekly tournament?

I always forget. The news posts also seem to come a bit too late and they aren't really that noticeable sometimes.. maybe a different way of advertising it?

I think the problem is the advertising. Ive been wanting to play in some of em, but i honestly don't even know the time they start, and i never bothered to look.

Sadly 12 noon is a bit early for most poker players. At least in the us, what time is that in Europe like 7-8? + its such low stakes. Not many players here care about winning 150$ first prize. I know its supposed to be just for fun, but this is poker.

I think it has everything to do with the community size. When LP first started, everyone seemed to know each other, and had a good time berating each other and playing for pride in these weekly events. Now, I haven't even heard of half the players and never talked to 3/4 of the tourney entrants, making the pride factor pretty much non-existent, which I think was why the majority of the players showed up originally.

Call me ja cause I rule.

its at 8 oclock for us europeans btw (as asked earlier).. i think thats a good time, but if its 12 for the rest of you guys, i guess its a bit too early (lazy fucks).

and also, what JizzleSmitts said ^

I agree with that. If there was a tournament for people with say 2k+ posts on the site and a maybe a little bigger buyin ($40-50 or something, not something super big, just that there is at least some money in the pool), then I would prolly be more interested.

If it's an issue of stakes

Have a mailing list for a couple stakes. Whenever it's deemed appropriate, autosend a pm for whoever signed up the password for the tourney. Whoever wants to play in the tourney's could sign up to be a part of the mailing list. Leave a banner on the front page to have people sign up for it, publicize the sign up list for a few weeks or so until max attention is reached. Low, med, and high stakes.

Low stakes could start earlier, high stakes could start later. I say this because your more serious high stakes people wake up later (U.S.) and go to bed later (Europe).

Perhaps with the use of PM's, people would no longer forget and play them on a more regular basis, and it being a mailing list type of deal and same stake people playing together, more of a bond could be achieved, thus popularity would perhaps rise.

Thank you for reading.

Dangerous, but worth the risk.

some of the lpers who used to play became millionaires...

i think the spontaneous 6max cash games at 200-600nl were a lot of fun though. Usually had like 5 guys playing 40vpip and the random LP nit playing only AA.

BenGb   Canada. May 11 2008 20:56. Posts 371

Playing it sometimes, but i'm now trying to grind micro stakes, and that 10$ is like 1 buy in for me, which is most of the time total waste.
I don't always have the time tho, with summer coming i'll be playing less poker in the afternoon.
I liked that tourney cuz i tought it was fun to play against LP'ers, and wasnt really paying attention to my roll since i was only playing for fun.
For right now i prefer to improve my game at 6max and to grind those micro stakes

increase the buyin just a little? make it worth while.. like, if you win now, you score $100 or something. that's not much to a lot of people here.
requiring 2k posts to play is stupid, a lot of ppl including myself are still regulars but dont post enough one-liners in hand histories and other threads to have racked up 2k posts yet, doesn't mean we shouldnt be able to play

Of course it may not be 2k posts plus, it may be 800 posts plus or it may be filtered by date of registration at LP.net, etc.

cause it doesnt seem worth it to play them anymore cause the field is very small and i would rather focus more in the sunday warmup or any other important tourney at that point , and yeah, perhaps increasing the buyin would be good, according to the last poll of 'what stakes do you normally play?", most of the people play low stakes (NL50+) so it shouldn't be a problem.

TwistedEcho    United Kingdom. May 12 2008 10:16. Posts 3122

For me, im usually playing sunday tournaments, and i found LP ones were distracting me from the ones that matter. I was paying more attention to some random $10 tournament and chatting to ppl, and totally ignoring the 215s i was playing at the same time.

Also, the buyin is pretty small so its fairly meaningless, but even if you made it bigger i doubt id care that much since it would just be a 100/215 sng with a tougher field than a normal sng, and im not all that bothered to play just for the sake of playing with LP people. (altho if ket agreed to play every week, with such dead money i might have to)

I dunno what else you can other than make weekly reports like you used to, and maybe have some kind of league/scoring system (like you already have) but it actually means something - either everyone throws is $x and makes a cash prize for the most points at the end of each 'season', or give away LP related prizes (other than coaching/custom icons i cant think of anything really)

1. Increase the buy-in to $50.
2. Change the day to Saturday.

800 posts? I better start getting busy spamming General - and do less post editing to add content and more new post creating. But yah - I wake up on Sunday and always ask BigRed - "am I too late for the LP tourneys" and always am - but if they're starting at 12 noon I never had a chance anyway.

I remember when it was very popular too and held some sort of recognition to winning it and had a big announcement from corwin, I would say "hey one day I will play that once I put money on PS and pwn those newbs". I have money on PS now and have no real ambition to play it anymore.

I agree with strato and twisted as the weekly tourneys do distract you from the important mtt's you are playing, so moving them to Saturday would not be a bad idea unless it conflicts with the schedulers of the weekly tourneys.

I don't like tournaments. You can't just quit when you feel like it :/.

Other than that the weekly LP tournament is a waste of time because of the buyin and the fact that a bunch of unknown peeps are playing them now.
