isn't it like 3 years old?

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat

I've noticed a ton of (seoul) or (pusan) or PIS.xxx players lately at NL100.

and speaking of Koreans, I saw the WPT Borgata event on TV the other day and I couldn't believe how horrible this guy Scott Yoon was. Funniest shit was it was HU with huge blinds, he raises like 7x BB and villians shoves preflop and he tanks forever with AK saying OMG you got aces or something like that and reluctantly calls. He misplayed so many other hands, it was painful to watch.

I'm curious why LP hasn't made a korean version of their site. Seems logical since they have a ton of contacts in Korea and there is a big market of players there. Rek/Elky with their korean language skills/contacts, BW fame and a WSOP/WPT wins would be sure to attract a large community.

I bet all the korean poker players here at one point got motivation from watching Lee Byung Hun in All In

I'm a bit baffled that Koreans, who utterly dominate the rest of the world in strategy games such as BW and Go, don't have comparable success in poker.

I mean take yellow as an example. He was 2nd best in the world in BW, so he's obviously a very intelligent guy. Pretty much every top foreign BW player from that generation is now winning at medium or high stakes. And yet, after quite some time playing poker, he has failed to consistently win at medium + stakes and is often seen grinding micro or low stakes.

Is there something fundamentally different about poker when compared to BW or Go? All three are strategy games that require deep analysis and analytical ability. Why is it that Koreans sick rape everyone else in BW and Go but those skills do not translate over to poker?

You can talk about the environment in Korea and the levels of interest that makes it conducive to producing top notch BW players. However, that argument does not apply in Go. Japan has a much more comprehensive environment than Korea, and China also has a strong infrastructure as well as a billion + people gene pool. And yet, Korea with a population much smaller than either nation just dominates them both in Go.

And yet, there are no Korean poker players with a huge amount of success on the pro scene. I guess maybe Steve Sung is the most accomplished. Kitty and Lovedom play at high stakes but there aren't that many high stakes korean players online. And there are just loads and loads of fish that donate to rekrul's room salon fund.

Judging by their success in Go and BW, I would think that it may be just a matter of time before a lot of Koreans become hugely successful in poker. Or could it be that there is something fundamentally different about these games and their success in BW and Go won't translate over to poker?

In starcraft, koreans - correctly - want to play the best player they can get game against, and you see them do a lot of hyper aggressive games, unlike foreigners who like to take the ekstra ekspand and pump some more factories up instead of killing him now. I think the foreigner way of playing brood war adapts much better to poker than the overaggressive - in every possible way - korean way, while the korean style has more potential in starcraft with enough training.

Valencia is a city in california where a bunch of (probably colluding) prima shortstackers live.Last edit: 09/05/2008 02:57

way to generalise the entire korean population.
koreans train their asses off for starcraft, and have hence found a very efficient way of playing.
i think we will see koreans starting to adapt and get better, and as time goes by we will be a forced to be reckoned with
