I 3-bet villain last orbit with JJ oop and he gave up on the flop.
This time I thought he was a little more likely to call me a somewhat lighter preflop, with a lot of pocket pairs, AQ, maybe even KQs, not sure.

After the flop, I thought there is a good chance my hand is good, but didnt want to get c/r-ed, so I opted to check. Not sure if this was a mistake or not. On the turn I figured he most likely has a weak hand that has some showdown value, like pocket pairs and maybe even AJ (or AK, but I think he would reraise back pf). So I decided to go for a small bet for value/protection.

River brought an Ace and he checked. At this point, I thought he most likely had a pocket pair, but wasnt completely sure if I could rule out Ace high. My question is, whether it is better to check here and hope to win a showdown some percentage of the time or bet the ace and make him fold all the pocket pairs (I think he would fold 22-JJ to a decent river bet) and win most of the time, but occasionally lose a bigger pot to some Ace or something?

there is a light at the end of the tunnel... (but sometimes the tunnel is long and deep as hell)Last edit: 28/04/2008 10:12

I beat off to a wide range of porn. || Actually, the $2/5 live plays a lot like $5/10 online and the $5/10 plays a lot like $10/20 online. // AvidGambler

Check, I'm more inclined to bluff the river if I bet the flop -> check the turn. Plus you got a little showdown value (not really much at all but you beat passively played draws which FoolMeTwice almost never plays passively but might since the board pairs the turn.)

Well, if you get CR-ed your hand is probably not good.

If you think about his range here it's actually pretty easy to play this hand. He just calls pre-flop 112bb deep with 1 person behind to act. You can rule out AK, QQ+ most of the time. Therefore it's a good spot to bet the flop. Checking isn't bad as well, but he can bluff you out later on with something worse.

He checks again on the turn. You can rule out AQ and KQ. His range is 22-JJ, AJ and maybe some suited connectors (not TJ and not hearts). You bet, he calls. He has TT-JJ most often.

The river brings an Ace which almost never helps him. You can turn your hand into a bluff and expect to get a fold almost always (unless he's very good to notice that your small turn bet is a bit inconsistent with Ax and hero call you).

wont you take me to valuetown?Last edit: 28/04/2008 14:06

just bomb the flop

if your range is so polarized that you aren't betting 2nd pair on the flop in this spot, that's pretty bad

what i'm saying is you should be checking almost 100% of hands on the flop, just to force action on later streets and be tricky and mix everything up, or if you're not checking almost 100% then you need to be betting 2nd pair. if you can't bet 2nd pair and aren't worried about your nit opponent bluffing you, then just check down.

Raise a little more pre. As played with the other player's coldcall and stacks slightly above 100 BB he's going to think he has implied odds with a pretty wide range. There's going to be a lot he'll just fold or call with on the flop, and I think you can safely cbet.

As played I probably bet river for metagame reasons. His hand really looks like TT-JJ but if he does end up making the call showing down 97o is going to mess with his head a little.
