So I've been out of the PC gaming world for a while, bit too much work and just had a laptop for the last few years. I used to be quite up to date with what makes a good PC but at this point I really don't have a clue anymore.

Ideally I want to be able to have a dual monitor for online poker but also for it to be decent enough to play recent games.

What would you guys recommend? Everything together can probably spend 1.5-2k euro

I miss buying gaming rigs. Since I quit poker, it's really hard to justify buying one now. That 40 inch philipps one must be insanely good

After gaming on a 144 hz / G-sync monitor, I would not recommended anything else. Fuck 4K until it has those. The extreme smoothness from these is what I value the most. I would not feel good about purchasing expensive GPUs to run such a high res when 60hz feels so awful to me now, and it would also feel wrong to buy something without G-sync at this point.

40' 4k monitor >> two 1080p monitors or 1440p. If you intend to spend a lot of time on the computer (poker or game) having a good monitor is prob one of the best investment one can make
I wouldn't get a video card until AMD releases their 3xx series & nvidia releases the 980 ti (should be soon I think), that'll lower the price of all cards on the market

Ehh probably need to watch some videos or read up on some of these terms. 60hz was by far the best thing back when I had a decent gaming PC but clearly we're way past that. What the hell is G-sync?

G-sync is a technology which essentially brings the good of V-sync (no screen tearing) without the bad of V-sync (extra input lag/screen judder). V-sync has always involved a sacrifice: it's awesome to game without tearing, but the extra input lag is not insignificant, so many people prefer to game with V-sync off. If you've ever played Counter-Strike you already know the importance of this. CS is one of the games where it's very important to sacrifice graphics in order to get lower input lag and better mouse responsiveness.

Here's a G-sync demo:

60hz is a thing of the past. The only reason people still buy 60hz monitors for gaming is either because of a modest budget or because 4k 144 hz monitors are not yet available. But even if they would be, it would simply not be affordable because on top of the price of such a monitor, it would require a huge amount of gpu power to get 100+ fps in recent games at 4K res. The middle-ground and best thing to purchase imo is something your PC can drive well enough to play at 100 fps+ on a 144hz monitor, which currently goes up to 1440p.

Cool thanks Loco makes sense now. So it seems a 4k monitor at this point can run games to up to 60fps from what I'm reading. This article is from Nov 2014 explaining a rig build for under $3k with that setup. http://4k.com/4k-monster-gaming-computer-for-less-than-3000-heres-how/

Is this already out of date you think?

If you care at all about getting the most value out of your money, I would not even consider 4K gaming. But if money is not an issue at all, then it's just a matter of what you prioritize in gaming. If you have the money to get a rig that supports it and all you really care about is the best eye candy, go with the 4K setup (ideally with g-sync). If you care about low input lag and a silky smooth gaming experience, invest in 144hz/g-sync.

I personally don't think regular 4K gaming is worth all that money for a suboptimal overall gaming experience. The immersion of having a bigger monitor with a bigger resolution is just one of the factors of a good gaming experience. I think it's too much of a sacrifice because a normal 60hz 4k display with V-sync feels really bad to play on because of the crappy input lag and the mouse feels incredibly choppy in comparison with the smoothness of 144hz. A 60hz G-sync 4K monitor is a notch better, yet still pricy and still involves a sacrifice. A 144 hz g-sync monitor is the best of both worlds currently, and since they are even available as IPS panels now, they really don't involve any sacrifice other than a ridiculously high res, but at 1440p that's already a very nice gaming res to me.

Personally when I shopped for a monitor a few months ago my work was pretty much cut out for me because my main game is CS:GO so I knew I had to go with 144hz because playing at a high level without it is unthinkable. What I didn't really know is that it would make everything else much better as well (well, except Skyrim, which is stupidly locked at 60hz). I can't recommend it highly enough.

I bought a 4k monitor earlier this year expecting to have more table space when playing poker but that isn't really the case. Since poker tables these days scale to your monitor size, the most important metric is the physical size of your monitor, not the resolution.

Also many programs are still not exactly 4k compatible, like the font size doesnt scale properly and some of the text is not visible sometimes. Other times the designer of the program just didnt take 4k into consideration when designing and it just looks awkward.

I personally didn't notice any difference between 2180p (4k) and 1440p when looking at the few videos out there with a resolution that big. If you held a gun to my head and told me to pick the 2180p resolution over the 1440p I'd probably have a 30% chance of dying

If i buy another monitor in the next year I won't be prioritizing 4k over other factors like size/cost etc

Dont be a sucker and buy 4k, it will take a couple of years before it becomes reasonably priced and where stuff actually runs properly on it.

I just bought a GTX 970 im also thinking of upgrading my monitors I currently have two 24"not sure if I should go for dual 27 or one 30.

I just built a budget rig a few months ago with the intention of gaming anything at ultra settings and 60fps at 1080p. Cost $1150. Dunno how well it would run dual monitors or 4k for gaming but it's within your budget once you throw in a couple of nice monitors, especially if you get a g-sync equipped monitor.

I have a 4k monitor and I wouldnt go back to 1080 or 1440 for anything in life lol
paid around 600$ ( same price as the dell 1440p )

bad thing is that I had to buy a supercomputer in order to run everything at this resolution
but worth the investment

Dont listen to anything I say

How's it working out for you so far? Recommend it? I'm not picky at all (I currently play a game at ultra low settings cuz I'm pretty certain my graphics card was fried upon purchase.. second hand.. just so it doesn't freeze). So ~1300 for a decent gaming/poker rig is kickass imo.

This newegg? What's warranty/wtfever like when you build your own stuff? Basic 1yr if it busts? Total aside - what's your thoughts on buying laptops/comp. stuff from reputable sellers off ebay? I saw some laptops that were going for ~450 on ebay that fit all the poker essentials (ssd, blah blah) that would cost roughly 1100 new from manufacturers. Thoughts?

Kinda all-over-the-place questions I know, but I'm 100% computer hardware stupid.

not the only bad thing. the good thing is that you're not aware of it so you don't think you're missing out. if you saw how bad your testufo results are, and how much input lag you have, you wouldn't feel as good about your setup. If you want at least some idea of how bad 60 hz is compared to 144 hz, look at the ufo below the one that represents your refresh rate in the testufo, and compare the motion blur of the 60hz ufo with it (e.g 30 fps vs 60 fps). Both look extremely blurry and jittery to me whereas it has literally 0 jitter/blurriness on 144hz (1ms) monitors. The end point is that the higher the refresh rate, the faster you see the rendered images, and you see them clearer (even more so with lightboost/ulmb enabled). This is crucial in a game like CSGO, but is also extremely nice to have in any kind of fast paced game.

i would not recommend spending 2k dollars or euros on a computer. i remember spending 2k on my first computers and boy did i regret it every time. withing 1 year friends were buying computers that are 500-600 dollars and better than mine.

Just do whats right
