Banned Amateur Blackjack Card Counter = WSOP Ban

http://www.highstakesdb.com/5650-poke...-for-counting-cards-at-blackjack.aspx

Although card counting is not currently illegal in the United States, casinos maintain the right to refuse service to any player, and when card shark Joe Stiers was suspected of using the technique while playing blackjack at Baltimore’s Horseshoe Casino, he was promptly asked to leave the property.

“I was attempting to count cards at an amateur level,” Stiers told the Baltimore Sun. “I’m pretty much always going to do that when I play blackjack, it’s a game of skill and you want to keep track of what cards come out because if the smaller cards come out you obviously have a better chance of winning and I’m going to raise my bet.”

That might not seem too out of the ordinary (it’s not at all), but when Stiers returned weeks later to take part in a poker event at the same venue – he claims he was still receiving advertising messages from the Baltimore Horseshoe about upcoming events after being kicked out – he was asked to leave again by members of staff mid-way through the tournament, and initially declined a refund on his $350 buy-in.

Stiers – who has over $500,000 in recorded live tournament earnings - refused to part with his chips despite the threat of a trespassing charge, which led to the local police department being called and his eventual removal from the property.

He wasn’t charged, and eventually received a refund on his buy-in by post, but he did not escape unscathed:

“I was banned from the Baltimore Horseshoe which has now prevented me from playing at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas and all related circuit events around the country. This is because they barred me from gambling at all Caesars locations, which owns the WSOP.”

“I didn’t think a blackjack infringement could’ve stopped me playing at the WSOP, if I’d known I probably wouldn’t have been playing at all.”

For a player like Stiers who grinds poker from the US and can’t play online, live festivals like the WSOP represent a major chunk of his potential income for the year, and the ban naturally came as a real blow.

“I hope they realise this isn’t something they should do. That it takes away legitimacy from the WSOP as a competition. Some people would consider it a sporting event, and if they’re saying that top competitors aren’t allowed in – they don’t even have to provide a reason they can just do it because they own the WSOP – how legitimate can it be?”

Do you think it’s fair that someone can be banned from a poker festival as a result of counting cards in blackjack? Is it simply Stiers’ own fault for employing the technique in the first place? Let us know what you think.

Under this logic, how is Phil Ivey still around. Or does he avoid Ceasar's properties

overall casinos run on very fucked up principles and are protected by the government which is even more fucked up so no thats not fair and i don't understand how its tolerated worldwide
ponzi schemes run on the same principles except you don't get to have the fun playing games & getting "free" drinks & foods
if you are going to offer a game of chances, you shouldn't be able to bury the chances of losing legally, thats like playing coin tosses where u win 50% of the time and break even 50% of the times, much fairness

Ivey has a strong PR and people can't abuse him that way

wondering what an "amateur" blackjack card counter is vs. a professional?

not ruling out that there's more to caesar's side of the story but this is definitely in the realm of stupidity i would expect from a casino

It seems to be not very profitable in the long run to play those kind of hands. - Gus HansenLast edit: 01/04/2015 02:47

This is complete bullshit, he got kicked out of the Baltimore’s Horseshoe Casino for card counting. But he got banned from Cesar and consequently WSOP for being a total fucking douche bag. Well deserved in my opinion.

All he had to do was to respect their initial decision and ban and then go talk to someone and make a deal so his BlackJack ban wouldn't impact his poker career. Something that is impossible now for him to do, but would have been very easy after the original ban.

ridiculous

I've noticed many other poker regs on the circuit doing the same thing as him when they would occasionally gambol in blackjack

Oh you know what, I misread this the first time.

My new conclusion is: "to make any sort of judgement I would need more details to the story, but my suspicion is the guy was being a douchebag."

Pretty messed up by casino management. But I mean, in a way the kid had it coming. He was told to leave the casino and came back. He was then given a citation for trespassing, called the casino which confirmed that he was banned, but then still came back anyway. Obviously idiotic by him.

I was backed off by Caesars Las Vegas a few years back. I was allowed to stay on the property, kept my diamond status, kept getting offers, and it didn't affect my WSOP play whatsoever. I did have a slight problem cashing out though. They initially claimed I couldn't keep my chips because they had no record of me winning them there, which I didn't, because I mainly transferred them from Rio to Caesars. It took a lot of waiting and arguing at the cage to get that settled. My ex-roommate was backed off from one Pennsylvania casino which somehow managed him to get completely barred from another even though it was an entirely different organization. Point is casino barring decisions are pretty random and at least a little bit fucked up. I feel for the kid a little bit and think he might even have a legal case, but by now he's thrown so much of his credibility out the window.
