If you want to play poker sure. If you want money from it no.

If you just play because you want to play, eventually money will come though, but doing it for money isn't a good idea.

Up to 1k a month is pretty doable, but the ammount of time spend learning and grind neccesary to achieve this is huge. If you don't absolutely love poker you are much better off spending your time developing other type of skills in another field that has a bigger reachable ceiling.

Thanks for your honest replies. I actually do have a bit of a background in poker (I played for a living in the easy mode era between 2004 and 2008) but haven't touched the game in over 6 years. I figured my background is basically worthless, considering how harshly the game has evolved and the various incidents and scandals along the way. If anything, it's more of a detriment than a benefit because my expectations are too high and the habits I've formed will be hard to break. There's some new legislation coming in my country making poker seem like a more attractive option (no tax of any kind as long as you play on a certified site, because the site owner is taxed instead) and I was looking for a new hobby. I guess I'll keep looking.

okay as a hobby it's fine but you can't have expectations it's like going to TL.net and saying "i just downloaded starcraft what's the fastest way to get a sponsorship"

It seems to be not very profitable in the long run to play those kind of hands. - Gus Hansen

Even though it'd be a hobby, I have no interest in playing if I can't grind out a steady profit. I've looked at the games I used to play and they're terrible. Reward programs also seem much less attractive now than they were back in the day. I'd have to worry about increased rake (as that seems to be a trend), player segregation, cashout penalties (less favorable exchange rates), the integrity of the site and its players (colluders), various tools (HUD's) and my own emotional volatility. I'll find something else to occupy my time with. It was fun to reminisce, but I'll look elsewhere.

Back in the day there was a rakefree poker room with a small user base. You'd pay a monthly subscription fee instead. It's unfortunate that never took off, because that would dramatically increase the game's attractiveness.

It's going to take a lot of time and effort (much more then you think) to consistently make $500+ a month probably from nothing. I mean anything can happen. I'd say no, it's not worth your time unless you want to go all out 100% effort, or only play for fun and not care too much about making money. But since you said you have no interest unless you can make consistent money, then no, it's not worth your time.

Pretty much this.
If it's not fun there's no point in even starting. Both from the motivation standpoint, opportunity cost and also you would be starting with a bad mindset from the get to - if you focus solely on the money handling variance becomes a nightmare.

I think you already told yourself not to play anymore. I am kinda smart, work at a big company, have spare money to invest in this game, read a couple of poker books in the downtime, and grind a shit ton at $0.01/$0.02 NLHE online and I am still bad after a full year. Online poker is really that hard nowadays. If you don't want to put in the effort and completely devote yourself into this, you can't really get far.

So, what do you think now?

That's actually some good advice! Been busy with work so haven't gotten the time to read much or play much. But I have actually started reviewing some of my questionable hands and taking notes on those. I will try to do more of that.

I am going to try to find another book to read. Any suggestions?

I liked easy game 1,2 and poker puzzle.
Try getting acces to some coaching sites like runitonce.com/cardrunners and concentrate on watching plenty of videos

99% of new players asking for advice on whether to start playing poker now are advised by 99% of the people in LP to NOT start playing.
99% of those same people don't listen to said advice. Does that make any sense?

Live poker is still better than any game i seen online where i live, so the answer is "yes". But as a part time thing, get a real 07.00 - 15.00 job first and play poker in the evenings/wekends imo. Because you never know what governments can come up with...
