http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/na...eacher-fired-ferguson-tweet/19020821/
| DUNCANVILLE, Texas — Duncanville teacher Vinita Hegwood, who resigned less than a week after her controversial tweet about Ferguson prompted a social media firestorm, has been fired by the school board. |
| In the statement, Hegwood said her tweet was a reaction to "a series of threatening and racist attacks" made toward her on Twitter during a debate over the Ferguson incident. |
You heard it, folks, the First Amendment is dead. No longer are people allowed to speak their minds freely without worry of consequences. This teacher has been suffering for too long at the hands of cowardly anonymous twitter users, and when she finally decided to take a patriotic stand, she is fired from her job.
What will it take to finally end racism in American in the year 2014? People have the right to speak their minds, especially minorities, who should be given a little more room for error considering the current systematic oppression all minorities face every day.
An outstanding teacher of twenty-years, brought down by racists who can only hide behind their keyboards and monitors. The real victim here is our children. A role model has stood up for the children to admire, and now, those children can only learn to keep quiet and never to speak.
Thankfully, however, God always opens another door when he shuts a door, and the Facebook community has been showing their support for this teacher. "She should've been promoted for her patriotic stand against racism" and "No way she should be fired for her PERSONAL opinions" are just some of the comments that can be read on her support page. |

Sigh... another person who doesn't understand 1st amendment rights.
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
The 1st amendment does NOT protect you from the CONSEQUENCES of these actions. |

lol OP filled with so much ignorance. first, you don't understand the 1st amendment. second, you somehow interpreted a tweet filled with hate, racial slurs, and death threats as "a patriotic stand against racism."
that being said, i think firing her over this is an overreaction. |

Im sorry, im extremely liberal about what people should be able to say.. but that's not am acceptable tweet for a teacher.
If i was a parent I dont think I'd let my kid take any of her classes which is obviously an untenable situation.
Or is your entire post satirical? |

Agreed.
If that tweet picture is real I think the action taken was justified. A person who is responsible for teaching and, somehow, raising the youth can't afford to write stuff like that.
Edit: checked, the tweet is real, I edited the topic since I think title was manipulative and not true. |

She is able to say whatever she wants, however, she signed a contract with the school district. Like most, if not all, places that you can get a job at, you are representing the company you work for even if you post on your own personal accounts. Ergo, she breached the contract she signed and faced the appropriate consequences. |
