Find a live rakefree home game with no people that have ever heard about GTO and stuff like that. For example if you go to university it shouldnt be too hard to find some students there that are willing to play a 25nl-500nl live game.

If you can beat 2nl online you will crush this live game unbelievably hard.

That's interesting, are the people playing live that much worse than the people playing online?

Yeah ofcourse but I like getting decently good at things when I play them. Alot of the fun comes out improving yourself.

Getting better will be a lot harder than you can imagine at this point. Don't have grand expectations about how seemingly easy it is to make money and you won't be disappointed. Even finding out where your capabilities ceiling lies can be a massive time sink with nothing to show for it in the end other than having fun and the opportunity cost of doing something else instead.

I believe this to be the consensus of the pool of poker players who have frequented this site for years and years and proven themselves winning players. If you are interested in learning try Doyle Brunsons super system books. I found them interesting at one point. When you can afford it or decide to put more of your money into it poker videos are very good for learning, especially the sbrugby and greenplastic ones from early cardrunners, they influenced a lot of good players at some point and get the seal of approval. This, however, requires a good understanding of terminology and having a bit of experience, maybe interesting down the line if you persist in pursuing poker.

Look at the thread above this one.

"Why did you quit playing online?" some of those guys were extremely successful.

Must have tools: holdem manager or poker tracker. Also, equilab.

a bit arrogant of a lot of people on here to constantly tell hobbyists to quit, how much they suck, etc. when they come here to have fun and learn a little bit.

OP - i think you can learn a lot from looking through hands some people post and reading some articles or signing up for a training site to watch videos would probably help a lot.

people who are saying poker is dead just haven't gotten better....sure, the game has evolved and gotten tougher, but so far I've found it far from dead.

i think you should really learn to consider things like bankroll management, note taking and table selection to start. guys you see often you want to pay more attention to and if you can start identifying really bad or good players you know who to sit with and avoid.

position is really important and hard to discuss, cause it plays such a large part in every decision, but start thinking about where you are in the hand, relative to the people you want to play at the table, and try to play in position (the last person to act) more often than not. make some poker friends from a forum or two and maybe a guy or two you play with and talk about hands you play.

this is a good and fun way to get better.

GL and i wish you the best!

Start at low stakes, set bankroll management rules and play your way up. Post hands online to discuss cases where you have question. Read forums such as this one (kinda been inactive lately) and 2+2 to get a sense what people are talking about. Maybe join a video site (not sure which one is the best these days) to get an idea of what sorts of things other people are thinking about. Go from there as you gain experience.

All the people saying stuff like "walk away" etc. are just trying to pump up their own ego.

lol you can disagree with the sentiment if you want, but saying it's for ego purposes is just stupid, it couldn't be anything further from that.

Hmm... a few things come to mind.

Don't play with money you can't afford to lose. This should be obvious to most, but worth pointing out. Even if the game is hot as fuck, I like using my own example of playing 200NL without really thinking I'd have to live off 20$ for two weeks if I lost all of it. I did, after getting AsKs and flopping the flush, buddy still managed to pull quad 10s out of his ass. Don't play with money you can't afford to lose. Don't feel attached to your money.

Have a need to know everything. Be curious. Wonder a lot. I think this applies much more to live poker, as the player who practices these habits and observes carefully can end up playing without having to look at his own cards sometimes if the playing field is so readable/predictable. I don't think this is often the case in casino live games though, but then again I only have experience playing in the one in my home town and rely heavily on my table image to influence my plays. Home games don't seem to have this, where it's always the same people, and once your personal image is set, let alone table image, most will tend towards your personal image when making their decisions. (I realize table image is sort of a combination of personal image, among other things, but doesn't act as strongly as knowing someone personally)

Treat every hand as a form of investment. If you invest in a hands against players of similar skill to you, you will both eventually break even in a rakeless game. Otherwise, the house wins. Invest in hands where you have a lot of information on said players and can react effortlessly to their plays.

Most of all, have fun. If it ever feels like a grind or a job (unless it really is your job, but even then I'd recommend against staying) then get up and go do something else.

This is my 2 cents. I'm in no way a successful professional poker player, in fact I'm a game developper and only dream of playing high stakes poker for a living. Though I feel comfortable with my career and meager winnings at the 200NL games at my local casino

- Don't start with any financial expectation
- Track all your results by game formats in an excel file
- Start to learn about variance and bankroll management quickly
- Find people with you can exchange about poker / meet better player than you
- Learn about game selection
- Read books : David Slansky very good read
