So I guess I quit because I couldn't win anymore from inside the US and didn't think it'd be worth the hassle of international travel because poker will inevitably be unwinnable and kill me mentally.

do you have a Bachelors degree or did you find this didnt matter once you learned programming?

After black friday(lost 20k), I grinded live for about 1.5 years. TLDR: won like 40k+ in a month then lost it all over a course of a year.

Then I luckily landed a job(thank god I didn't drop out of college) in the online gambling industry when NJ legalized online poker. After a year, Party Poker gave me an offer and now work there as a manager. As a casino license holder, I'm not allowed to gamble in NJ, so I haven't played poker in months. Going to play WSOP next year though so can't wait for that.

wow thats cool bro; hit me up if you ever get any domestic rakeback deals going online!

my path has been nearly identical to TimDawg's except i held an Irl job for a while after black friday administering meds at an old folks home and i'm playing now online and live in the Bay Area, northern California. Oh and my hourly is not quite $85 haha i wish. That might be doable on Bovada but even the 510 live here on a good day that will be tough. California rake is weird its basically a 6 dollar drop anytime a flop is seen regardless of stakes (rake+bbj) so 3/5 and especially 1/2 i feel winrates are lower than elsewhere. 10/20 is a time game but doesn't run much. Games are active though. Any other LPers play up here? Bay 101, Matrix, Lucky Chances, Oaks?

I've been considering going to College and working towards a degree (possibly in Computer Sciences). I don't know what else to do. I can't wake up every day and play poker anymore, it doesn't satisfy me like it use to, I always have to force myself just to play.

The thought of spending 4-5 years in school for a degree, then 1-2 years at an entry level job, just to later acquire 9-5 career, depresses me. I hope I don't find the experience to be as miserable as some of you do.

I plan on playing poker during the winter to give it one last shot, I want to see if I can reignite my love for the game. While I'm at it, i'll also learn Python, along with taking some online courses of grade 12 math, calculus.

There's a free Python course currently running https://www.edx.org/course/introducti...r-science-mitx-6-00-1x-0#.VK-NxyvF_4k if any of you are interested.

Smuft I'm just getting back to online poker. Seems like a tough time to just be getting started. Can you name off any of the old SC players who are still doing well in online poker. Are any of them coaches? What areas should I concentrate on right now. I feel like putting the work in at 50NL 6 max might be a good start. What are the most profitable types of poker on Carbon/ACR. Also I play live 2/3NL but the game is so different than online that my ranges differ a lot. Should I focus on one?

Elky

edit: didn't catch the online part.. Elky is doing well in poker in terms of having his stars sponsorship and playing all the big live events. Not so much online I guess.

This thread is depressing to read, I stopped playing for a long time and wanted to get back, I would be happy to be a winner at low stakes like NL100, did the games really get that hard or just at higher stakes?

As Smuft wrote in OP there are big winners in every field, but the game got way harder than before

I have a smaller winrate at NL100 now than I did at NL2000 say 5 or 6 years ago, and I doubt it's because of me getting worse

One day good. One day bad. And some days, even hope

It's weird. In some emo-moment in my life in 2009 I decided to quit only to come back 2 months later. But this was when I was still playing 400NL-2KNL. After that I kept playing for years until now when I'm really looking forward to quitting at the end of the year (just getting that last PS milestone). I probably won't quit fully, but I will definitely try to establish a different source of major income whether that be a 9-5 job or my own company or something. I 'only' started earning good money in 2008 so I missed most of the golden age, but still did very well. Right now I don't have a lot of expenses but I earn almost nothing compared to what it was. Plus enjoyment just isn't really there anymore. I think this might also be a matter of getting older. You want to get more out of life than playing a card game at some point.

Curious where I'd be if I did quit in 2009. Probably grinding out a job. I don't know if I'd be happier than I am now.

It's fun reading this since it's only 6 months ago. I did quit poker full-time at the end of the year and went out searching what I wanted to do. About 3 weeks into it I had decided I would just get a job in the field that I studied in (finished my degree in 2009) and at the start of April I got a job. Went waaay faster than I imagined and when I actually started going for it I surprised myself at what I was capable of in terms of presenting myself and my motivations. Right now I've been working for about 6 weeks and I'm feeling very relieved above anything else. Not having to deal with poker anymore feels awesome. I don't make all that much yet (will improve after a year) but thanks to poker I don't have a lot of expenses anyway. I feel way happier in life now even though I wake up every day at 5:15 and have way less free time. That thing people say about free time is true though, you enjoy it way more when you have less of it plus you identify way better with your friends who have normal jobs. Then again, I like the learning aspect of new job and I get complimented a lot because of the pace at which I'm learning and picking things up. It also helps that I get along with all my co-workers.

So yeah, nothing but positivity in my life since quitting poker. If you have doubts about continuing, I'd definitely recommend people to get out. I haven't played since beginning of March and I don't intend to at this point in my life.

That's cute. Let's hope you'll have the same mindset 6 years later

Started online poker around 2006-07 during highschool and parents banned me from playing (ip blocked, liquidpoker, ps any poker site would not load) till i left home for college. Told myself ill play 8 hrs a day during my sophomore year and take a few classes and if i dont make 50k-100k i'm done for good. Reached 8k while withrawing about 500 a month and was a breakeven player with about 1k or so a month in RB putting me in the positive. Basically, not gonna pursue something I don't enjoy (anymore at least) where my hourly is inconsistent and pretty much equate to only minimum wage...

In the end i played 1k hu and pretty much ended up +1k after over 3000 hands and cashed the rest

Nice rinny, looks like chia is still playing as of this month. -20bb/100 for 400k hands lol. Off the top of my head if he only played 4nl he'd only be down 3200. He donate much higher too or just like 10nl - 25nl?

if it wasn't for rake he wouldn't even be down that much. so gross fuck rake

Actually I also have a much better winrate in NL2k than at NL100 right now. NL100 is just tougher because it's a lot of reg on reg, 6max 2k mostly only runs with a fish, and some regs just got too much money and gamble in them whereas NL100 players actually try, thats my theory anyway.

I quit after realizing that I had a really toxic strategy for playing poker; never study and major tilt issues. If you remember I'd break monitors and shit, put a hole in the wall once. It was never the money, it was just the principle of losing. I'd rage over bad sessions at NL2. My motivation for playing was all wrong, I just wanted out of a normal 9-5 and to "do what I want" with a poker income. Now that my salary is sufficient to let me take vacations and have nice things I dont really have a desire to play anymore. I still fantasize about playing professionally one day but I know that'll probably never happen now. (Probably? lol, ok lets be real it will NEVER happen).

Interesting look back in time. I picked up live poker seriously for the first time in January of this year and have been doing well, albeit not putting in many hours since it's just the same players at the same homegames every day, and the occasional trip to Florida. I think I got in a fight with my g/f one night and decided to just play poker and won like 2k and just kept playing each day until I went busto or showed signs of a winning player. Once I felt I was winning I started taking trips to card rooms to see if I could survive in such an environment and for some reason really enjoyed it. Funny thing is I had about $20 on WPN after a bitcoin xfer test and decided to play some 1/2c and just immediately found myself getting frustrated to the point of total tilt where I was just flipping with maniacs. I just cant handle online. Actually what I cant handle is unjustly losing, but the thing about live is that it forces me to maintain my composure since I'm not the kind of person to blow up in person. I take my beats like a man and move on. Plus I only bring 2-3 buyins per session so I'm forced to quit at a certain stop loss, whereas online it's too easy to just sit there and keep reloading forever. There have been times where I have painfully had to leave a live table because there was some fish that was just begging to surrender the 1000BB's in suckouts he had collected, but my wallet was empty and I had to go, and it was probably for the best anyway.

bye now
