with the possible exception of actor, I'd argue that each and every one of these are outside your reach, because you can't just "decide" to become top dog in any of these after you're 25, you need to work on them from when you are a kid. And then as kids don't really make choices for themselves but are more likely to be pushed in one direction, and because you need to be pushed hard from a young age to make it in the most competitive fields.. it's not the conscious effort to dedicate yourself to something that makes you a success.

I mean if you're just talking about "I want to learn how to cook" or "I want to lose 20 lbs fat and become stronger" or "I want to learn how to code" then sure, your success will largely be dependent on your dedication to the cause, although a really great chef or a really great programmer both need some genetic advantage over the rest of the field. But this type of "the world is my oyster and I can do what I want if I just try hard enough" is a mentality which is more likely to be harmful to your mental health than positive, because normally the assumption that you can do "anything" if you just put your mind to it is wrong, and normally you'll come to realize this after failing - making you depressed. Positive thinking actually is important and good- but it needs to be realistically minded. Thinking there's not a thing in the world you can't do, that's just inventing a new god to believe in, it's not grounded in reality and if it provides you with salvation it's only through delusion.

How many people do you think read your blog, read it to:

a.) Get advice from you.
b.) Checkin on your current situation.
c.) Read comments from people trolling you.

I think you're wrong about why poker is differentiated from other sports, specifically because it's something that people almost never start in their formative years since gambling is an adult game. And for the other sports there are physical things about being an athlete. But for instance Cziffra the pianist spent WW2 fighting and in prison camps and shit and he was one of the best. Andrea Bocelli started his singing career in his 30s. There are other things that are wholly intellectual like poker, such as chess, writing. Why did Rodney Dangerfield the comedian peak so late in life for instance.

What I am saying is not that anybody can do just anything they want, but the limits aren't that clear either, it seems you can always find people who break the mold. I mean for an average person there's no difference in the delusion of saying "I'm going to be the next x" or "I'm going to be the next x in my 30s." Was it really the progression of years that made something impossible, I think you are right about a genetic advantage, I would have been a shitty artist if I had started at 5 I just can't fucking do it it's not neurologically compatible with me.

I think there would be other factors that are correlated to age, it's not age per se, just that for people in society lateral career moves are hard, people lose their drive to work on things if they get bogged down with families or whatever. Also it's biased to judge only by the extreme peaks. Maybe I can't be Albert Schweitzer but if I worked hard for a long time I could be a successful doctor.

Okay like, if all of poker was like, top players playing heads up for 50k hands or more, I could agree that it's a skillful game.

But that's not even remotely close to how it is. The poker that gets the most exposure is tournament poker where being the world's best player essentially amounts to having somewhere between 3 and 7 lottery tickets instead of the 1 people buy in for. Professional poker is probably the most luck based out of any activity people receive worship over. (if you don't wanna drag it down a level and include like, birth lottery or whatever. )

Have you ever taken a break from poker and lived normal Ryan? Like just as a personal experiment, get a real job, even if it's something lame and just do that for awhile and see how it makes you feel?

I don't expect you to answer these questions; I'm not trolling but would be interested to hear your honest answers.

Do you ever stop to think that you might be happier without poker and applying yourself to something else?

I thought long and hard on this for a few months.. I decided I'd rather be my own boss for life. I do quite well.

Do you consider that successful people look not only at their passion but also at the myriad of factors that contribute to their success? If you're passionate about movies, it would be foolish to invest 15 hours a day into trying to get people to buy VHS tapes.

I just love the game its my passion and tons of ppl just slack off and don't understand some key things.

Why do you think so many notable professionals (from LP and farther afield) are absent from the online games these days?
because after you have enough dough, live arenas become where the real money is. but to get that real money, online is most likely the best place. at least with my skill sets..

Incidentally you cant do anything you want. You don't have the money to do it. You are in debt. You are a slave to online poker. You are running in a hamster wheel of absurd rake. You would probably struggle to find gainful employment with the grand canyon size crater in your resume caused by poker.

im not a slave to poker, i can quit anytime i want. i love the game, not many ppl understand my love for the game. when i got in vancouver, jlost88 started playin 24/7, im a huge spark in the game imho.

Ill leave this here. It applies to you, Benjamin1 and others who are playing a lot of PLO Zoom every month. Another consideration for your goals and aspirations,.

i moved my game to max $10 bi for cahgames for zoom, im not gonna play that ne more. 3.5 180s and a few mtts a day.

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/153...s-between-plo-nlhe-incl-zoom-1461881/

For what its worth; I have come to the conclusion that poker is far from dead, but as far as online poker is concerned that ship has sailed.

online is fine if u pick the right games but i don't think online cashgames are beatable. 3.5 180s, cap mtts, stuff like this are where u find your edges.
