Other

- The headliner was originally scheduled to take place on August 2, 2014 at UFC 176. However, on July 2, Aldo pulled out of the fight citing a neck injury suffered during training. Subsequent to Aldo's injury, that event was postponed on July 8, when the UFC announced they were unable to replace the original main event fight and with less than a month before the event, the decision was made to postpone the event – though the promotion said the numbering scheme for already scheduled pay-per-views after it, including UFC 177 in Sacramento on August 30, would remain in consecutive order. That entire fight card was re-booked for other events.
- Jeremy Stephens was linked to a possible bout with Lucas Martins at the event. However, Stephens' manager indicated shortly after the fight announcement was leaked that they had no intention of taking the fight. Martins has since been scheduled to face Darren Elkins instead.
- Fabricio Camoes was originally scheduled to face Josh Shockley at the event. However, Shockley was removed from the bout citing injury and replaced by Tony Martin.
- Beneil Dariush was expected to face Alan Patrick at this event. However, Patrick was forced to pull out due to a broken jaw he received during training. Dariush will now face Carlos Diego Ferreira.

With you man, the belt changes hands Saturday

Mendes > Aldo (Wish I coulda gotten him when it spiked to +335 - one of the best values I've seen this year)
Teixeia > Davis
Maldanado > Stringer (Love Maldanado, don't think he's very good obviously, but was unimpressed in the Stringer fight I just watched, for a striker he looks really stiff and his torso looks ripe for the body shots)
Elkins > Martins
Ferriera > Dariush - Pickem fight in my eyes, like the line on Dariush, gun to my head Ferriera cuz its in Brazil
Magny > Macario
Cabral - Kotani - Dunno but this Kotani guy must be AWFUL for the line to be where it is after Cabral got wrecked by Zak Cummings, who is not good
Jorgensen > Reis
Fili > Arantes - Pretty confident in this one, will be betting Fili if line stays the same. He's a damn good prospect.

No clue about other two fights

I feel Mendes has improved enough to win this fight, while Aldo's skills have stayed stagnant.

I'm able to look past the 4 scrubs Mendes beat and see that he has looked better in certain areas while beating them. It's akin to boxers who repeatedly face scrubs to improve in the sport and show the fans improvements in the areas they want to see said fighter improve in.

Regarding Aldo/Mendes #1:

The only time I've seen Mendes fade was against Nik Lentz, and Mendes said in the post-fight show that he was sick, which hurt his cardio.

Mendes vs. Aldo #1 only lasted 1 round, and the round was even or you could've argued that Mendes won the round. IMO, it was equal, since both guys were feeling each other out (which Aldo does in every 1st round of every UFC fight). The only things that I take away from their first fight is that Aldo held the cage from being taken down, and then Aldo landed a knee to Mendes' face as Mendes spun around to face Aldo and ran into the knee with 1 second left in the round.

I can't take anything away from that fight, but others act like Aldo straight dominated Mendes. If Mendes would've turned around and stood straight up or turned around and backed up a little like most guys do, the round would've ended and who knows what would've happened next.

The thing about Mendes is, he hasn't fought any top fighters in his streak other than maybe Guida, who's not looking great these days after getting besmirched by Bermudez. So I'm not sure how much of his recent domination is a ton of great improvement and how much of it is just him crushing guys that are way beneath him.

He's basically fought cans and worse wrestlers who have bad striking.

Obviously he's gotten better, but I'm not sold on how much people think he's gotten better.

I can't argue with your logic, but I am confident you will see on Saturday (whether he ultimately wins or not) that Chad has gotten far better than you thought. Not about the wins, or opposition, but the way he's performed within those fights combined with the external factors and plateauing of Aldo that make me very confident in this pick. If Chad loses, Aldo will have to put on a spectacular performance, even by his own standards.

In the first fight Aldo didnt dominate Chad, he only caught him with a good knee. I am not saying Mendes would win but I think he has a good chance. I am not betting in this match.

My possible bets:
- Teixeira by KO/TKO +200
- Diego Ferreira (-200)
- Hans Stringer (+130) only because Fabio Maldonado sucks.

Match-up and Phil Davis folding to anyone he can't immediately take-down and who has power. He won a total of zero seconds of the AJ and Rashad fights, and I don't see him grapple-fucking Glover.

Teixeira reminds me a lot of AJ. Huge, strong as shit, great TDD, and hits like a tank.

Basically Phils striking is horrendous and I don't think his wrestling is good enough to take Tex down. I might be wrong though, Tex hasn't really had his wrestling tested by any good wrestlers other than Jones who got him down a few times.

My issue with Mendes is his striking still seems very limited. He basically seems to just land ko punches over and over, like Faber. He's gotten much better at it and it works because he's a vastly superior athlete to everyone he's fought, but I don't think it's that great.

He still doesn't jab, doesn't kick, doesn't set stuff up well, doesn't create angles. I haven't seen anything from him that makes me think Aldo won't pick him apart.

Mendes might be able to get the takedowns though. He was close the first fight and I'm sure he's definitely gotten better at mixing his striking in with his takedowns so that might help.

I actually think the main key to this fight is will Mendes be able to take Aldo down off leg kicks. I think it's Mendes only way to stop the kicks since we haven't seen him checking shit still, and Aldo is really good at setting them up anyways. Once Frankie got a takedown off a kick, Aldo basically stopped throwing them. So I'll be super interested to see what happens in the first with Aldo's first couple of kicks.

One thing though is I don't think Mendes will have the cardio advantage that we all thought he would. He's looked to of slowed down in the 3rd round in his last couple of fights. Sure he was sick against Lentz, but he also slowed down in previous fights. With the way he's built I'd be surprised if he can keep up that pace for 5 rounds.

I like Texeira in this too but I think the comparison to AJ isn't all accurate. Feel like AJ has more quickness...explosive power...while Texeira is a bit more plodding with thumping power (a bit of a silly way to describe but I think there's a difference) which might be the little difference that Phil needs to duck under and get a takedown.

Phil's striking is certainly horrendous though. Just not a natural striker and doesn't look like he'll ever be fully comfortable there. Even when people kept claiming how improved his striking was...could tell his striking movements still didn't look fluid and it was just a lifetime wrestler trying to apply what he had just learned in the gym from maybe a couple weeks ago

I just love watching Aldo's leg kicks, win or lose that's what I'm excited for.

We have now sunk to a depth at which restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men.
