Hi, OLD member of the forum here. Several of you know me as the drunk marijuana addict /disclaimer.
I hit 5.3 avg arena wins on hearthstone lately and it reminded me about poker, which I haven't played for 7? years.
I'm thinking of dabbling in minstakes (5nl) for an hour or two every so often instead of the hearthstone.
Haven't drank alcohol or smoked weed for 3 years now and in final year of software engineering degree so I'm feeling a bit brighter these days and like it might have some potential (as an hour or two hobby/replacement for video games!).
So do you guys have any basic tip for beginner?
e.g.
Is PS a good place to go for minstakes (i'm talking 5nl) or is it bot infested?
Is pokertracker4 still the software to use? (I see it has a 30 day trial version).
Is there a beginners tutorial you'd recommend in particular, or not?
Do people stream (like for starcraft/dota/hearthstone) so you can learn from watching?
Would you say the best thing to do is to put £20 down on pokerstars (for their 100% bonus presumably) and just see what it's like?
I do have skype/steam if anyone wants to correspond or just PM me.
Hope everyone is well. Cheers.
Edit: my first hand of poker (keep almost writing "dota" instead of "poker" lol)

am i supposed to call here? due to having .05 already in the pot? (this is maybe what the first thing i need to research is - figuring out strength of hands and therefore how much i should value their potential compared to cost of calling)
+ Show Spoiler +
does this look like a correct line of play or should i bet into the flop or call the flop? (!? lol) also notice that i minraised here . actually i think this line is very strong...?
+ Show Spoiler +
this looks like a really common line but i don't know how to play it at all.... could anyone advise? presumeably the first step is to bet more on the flop. but its pretty scarey........
+ Show Spoiler +
what am i doing wrong here?
+ Show Spoiler +
holy shit this is fun, its JUST like playing HS except there are WAY more decisions where you think "AH FUCK I SHOULD HAVE DONE X" (not to mention the ones where you have no idea what to do)

hand 2) fold or 3 bet.
hand 3) 3 bet larger
hand 4) 3 bet preflop.

quick update -
poker is pretty incredible so far
there are so many hands where i've realised afterwards that i could have played better, its quite astounding. things like "i could - should - have bet the river a bit just then and got an extra $1 or whatever out of him"
but the coolest thing is that i think i'll gradually be able to retain this knowledge
i just started playing 6max ZOOM (stars) and its a bit crazy, it seems like most of the player just use the zoom feature instead of defending/attacking blinds.
not only that but the lack of reads/being read means that you can focus solely on making correct basic plays without worrying about anything else, which is really good practice!! |

post hands in the low stakes poker section. You'll probably get more feedback. |
