I like hearthstone quite a bit. I used to play tons of sc2 but poker and hearthstone definitely take over. I still hop in an sc2 game from time to time, or start getting trained for AHGL season.

When I started going to the gym I went with a uni m8 who was already going 6 times a week for 3 years, so i was absolutely clueless, but he gave me routines and showed me basically everything. Tbh I do believe 80% of fitness instructors out there are full of shit and are clueless and have pretty much wrong fundamentals. They just put out the same routine to absolutely anyone that comes... you cant have someone thats for example 1.90,70kg w the same routine as someone thats 1.60, 100kg thats absurd. I' wouldve read a shit ton on forums if I didn't have someone to teach me

Reading - well don't know there are a bunch of books I could recommend, but different people would like different stuff, i literally have to force myself to read stuff like Anna Karenina, just because its considered best novel ever doesn't mean I enjoy it, but basically what I'd recommend is Terry Pratchet, Stephen KIng - The dark tower series, obviously A song of Ice and Fire series, The Black Swan by Nassim Taleb - best economics book ever, Daniel Kahnemann - Thinking fast and slow - best psychology book ever

Cooking - dunno I just find something that I think would taste cool and try to do it, haven't really tried anything hard though, but its kind of cool to be able to cook sick good food

cooking is a great skill to have, and something you can continuously improve upon even if you have it as a serious hobby for several years - and even if you just have a "learn basic cooking" as a goal then that will also greatly benefit you. Just do stuff like watch gordon ramsey's youtubes, browse pages like smittenkitchen.com, read about food and look at pictures of food that make you want to go like omg I wanna eat that, and then learn how to make it. gonna fail some times at first, but food just becomes increasingly better and better and you can improvise more and more.

my wife started being more serious about it like 3 years ago, was just regular girl-skilled then, now she literally cooks michelin star quality food (assuming equally good ingredients of course, which is kinda the hardest aspect of fine dining ).

other than that, it depends on where you live, but man, find an outdoor activity. If you live somewhere there's snow, start skiing (possibly snowboarding but I think skiing is more of a wholesome activity, not necessarily more entertaining tho. ) If in an urban region and you can't get out of it much, start playing some sport involving a ball (always more entertaining and you find yourself improving in more different ways than if you just run or lift weights or do some goal-oriented exercise imo), like football(soccer) bball raquetball. If you're living in some rural, non-snowy region, start biking. Skiing or biking should best be combined with smoking weed, like you find more beautiful outdoors areas that just yell out "man, this place is PERFECT for getting high!!" and that becomes a highlight of any trip, and motivation for going out, and you'll find yourself super happy about it.

Or you can start playing an instrument! Definitely seems more rewarding than playing lol.

And then there's the final tidbit; if you actually enjoy your time, it's not wasted. So I mean, if you start with 3 new hobbies and you find yourself getting a little swamped and not having enough time to do stuff, finding 2 hours every week to actually just play some relaxing computer game can be awesome. It's just boring when you're doing it all the time.

I second biking and skiing. Don't know about the weed part tho.

Gym and reading. I am also getting into golf & enjoying it. Others have said cooking but I would say eating well / healthy in general. Everyone should get in a few hours a week of gym (or some type of exercise) & reading though.

I'm interested in all 3 but it's hard to get started. Cooking.. my ingredients always go bad. You can't buy a perfect amount for 1 meal. If you buy in bulk, you have to eat the same thing for multiple meals and that can get old. I like reading self improvement stuff but I'm not much of a reader. I always fall asleep. Fitness is hard to keep at it. I've been in and out of gyms.

It is really easy to get started. It takes 2 seconds to make the decision. Being an addict of LoL or any sorts might carry over and actually be beneficial. There is so much to read on all the topics, you just need to get motivated.

The mind of a chef
Anything by Heston Blumenthal
El Bulli
No Reservations
Jiro dreams of sushi

Just coined some of the well known ones. Jamie Oliver gets old really fast, so does Gordon Ramsay.

I'm a believer in ABC. Get the basics down and the rest is up to you. It is beneficial to be able to cook an omelette, cook pasta and rice proper, roast a chicken, grill a steak, make chicken soup. Robert Rodriguez 10 minute cooking school is really fun and a good starting point. Pick a few of your favourite meals and learn to cook them and cook them well. Master a couple of dishes that you can always go back to.

Your ingredients don't go bad because it is their fault, it is yours. You can plan ahead what you are going to eat. However it is a lot tougher to cook for one than to cook for two or more. Find a cooking class, costs about the same as a decent restaurant with such added benefits. I'm going to stop typing because all you need to get going has already been mentioned and the rest is up to you. Go for it. It will improve your life quality and everyone loves to eat.

Also curious about your forex trading, can that be listed as a bad habit already now or are you still doubling your money every week?
This isn't meant as an offencive jab. If you find investing/trading/markets interesting i could recommend a bunch of books.

Thanks guys for all the recommendations. Yea.. now how to get off my ass and do some of these things is the hard part. I made 50% in a month, not 100% every week. It's not going as well this month. I've been putting in more hours on poker and that makes a lot more money than trading right now so it's kind of on the back burner. I'm still working on my precision because sometimes price takes an entire week to move to where I want it to go and I end up giving up watching. Yeah I'm definitely interested in investments. I've got a chunk of change in the bank just sitting. I'm thinking on just putting it in S&P500 or BRK.B. If forex ever pans out well I'll make a larger deposit to see if I can make some aggressive gains. What do you do for a living cariadon? You seem to be a well rounded individual. You should blog some.

Learning how to cook and regularly exercising has tremedous positive effects. They go hand in hand actually. Summoning the discipline to be consistent at both will be well worth it. Passion can't be bought but it can be nurtured through expanding your universe in both cooking and training. This can be done by watching movies/serials/clips and reading and discussion and a sort of regular analysis and reflection upon how things are going. From this vast pool of knowledge it is up to us to decide what is true - the knowledgeable you are the better decisions you are able to make. What is achievable greatly surpasses current expectations. If you are a passionate person you will get more hungry as you go along. How is leading a higher quality, more fulfilling, more productive life a hard decision? I don't get it. No excuses.

I work as a cash equities trader. I think your plate is pretty full now as is but if there is sincere interest in finance/trading in the future i could recommend what i consider "true" and valuable books for anyone just starting out.

If Anthony Bourdains food porn 1 & 2 don't get you interested in cooking there is little hope. Accepting the fact that you will be missing out on divine gastronomical experiences will become reality.

cariadon, Ferran Adria is a god and what you recommended is really great for people who have skills and just need some more inspiration. But it doesn't really help out a novice. A vast majority of dishes made at El Bulli are literally impossible with regular cooking utensils. Definitely agree that jamie oliver can get old (not ramsay though, his youtube instructionals are varied and packed with cooking tips), but you gotta do this step by step. For a novice, stuff like "grate your own Parmesan instead of buying pre-grated" and how2 make a quick pesto is way more handy than how do you turn food into jello.

read up on recirculating aquaculture. its like an aquarium hobby but has $$ potential to be made.
its easy to understand but takes a lot of practice to run a close to perfect system. each person has their own little secret formula. its a bit of chemistry, simple engineering and animal biology depending on what fish you want to culture. i did marine soft shell crabs at home and its fun lol

I definitely +1 the reading, exercise, cooking sentiments. Some things to add and some questions:

I also agree with sports and outdoors stuff suited to the area. Something that I have been considering more now that I am out of the invulnerable 20s and discussing these sorts of things with some older, wiser human beings is the outdoors, full body, longevity stuff is best. The swimming, the yoga, the tennis, the skiing, the biking*.

*As an aside for the bikers:

How do you guys deal with the grundle discomfort? I absolutely love most aspects of biking but am just wondering if there are manageable ways to deal with the taint trouble. Does it get better? How? No long term perineum, nutsack, general rig issues?

Another note on hobbies:

For most, something creative and a means to get away + to express oneself is boss. That can be reading, gymnastic, cooking from above or some others different types of music, arts, painting, drawing, writing, w/e.

Riding my road bike is infinitely better after having bought cycling pants (padded), shoes with cleats and custom fitting the bike. Tinkering so it fits you perfect. Get a saddle that fits you and tinker with the adjustments especially saddle height ... it is work in progress but well worth the efforts. Dunno what you mean about the rig but i guess make sure you aren't riding lower than your flexibility allows or handlebar being too narrow so it closes your ribcage/lungs. I believe being consistent in maintaining any sort of activity is most important. Tennis players are stronger on one side typically... so from a holistic point of view no.. but as an awesome game for sure ! The older you get, the more you appreciate doubles And golf should only be attempted while having previously accepted the inevitable time sink. Black hole for time really.

On general rig health:

From a negative, neurotic point of view even if one does not enjoy tossed salads (which sensitivity and enjoyment is surely at peril) many doctors have taken the position that an excess of 3 hours of cycling a week is cause for less healthy erections.

cariadon   Estonia. Sep 26 2014 15:36. Posts 4019

That's very enlightening. With that said... I'm going to pretend i didn't read it.

Like if you ride 3 hours a week for a long period of time you will, among other things, be getting a lot older... living in its essence is unhealthy.

If you're into cooking, I highly recommend this guy. He gives general techniques to his recipes and makes it semi-entertaining as well.
