What are some hobbies or useful/fun skills to get into?

I'm trying to rid myself of bad habits. I realize I spend a huge chunk of my time playing league of legends and that shit is just a waste of life. I don't even have fun playing. What are some things you guys do that you couldn't see yourself without?

i was going to say this. be sure to follow Rippetoe's starting strength program

a nice thing about powerlifting is that you can get meaningful results while spending relatively little time on it. an hour or an hour and a half 3 times a week will be optimal until you have trained for 18 months and squat about 200 kg, and at that point you are quite strong (in fact, very possibly stronger than anyone you've ever met). On a negative side to get any results one has to cut down on drinking, because hangover day is no train day and alcohol hurts recovery.

reading, tons of human knowledge is on the internet, add the good parts to ur brain, basically some kind of skill that doesn't depend on other people unlike poker. something like music it's just u and the instrument.

It seems to be not very profitable in the long run to play those kind of hands. - Gus Hansen

how do you cook?
what do you read?
what's your fitness routine?

I'm interested in all 3 but it's hard to get started. Cooking.. my ingredients always go bad. You can't buy a perfect amount for 1 meal. If you buy in bulk, you have to eat the same thing for multiple meals and that can get old. I like reading self improvement stuff but I'm not much of a reader. I always fall asleep. Fitness is hard to keep at it. I've been in and out of gyms.

^What's wrong with eating the same meal a few times, it's only 1 of your daily meals.

if you find Fitness to be tedious, consider joining an mma gym. It's fun, and It becomes easier when you have a trainer/instructor telling you what to do.

I dont know what a dt drop is. Is it a wrestling move? -Oly

Most important for lifting weights is enjoying your time in the gym. Squats, bench, deadlift, cleans are fun. Curls, tricep extensions and leg press not so much.

Edit: I eat the same stuff every day, remove post workout food when I don't lift.

Get into Judo. You'll learn how to throw people and learn some submissions. I'd recommend BJJ, but I can't recommend something I wouldn't want to do myself.

If you get into Judo, you'll come to appreciate some of the Judo stars we have in modern day MMA like Ronda Rousey, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Karo Parisyan, Rick Hawn, and Hector Lombard, among others.

I like hearthstone quite a bit. I used to play tons of sc2 but poker and hearthstone definitely take over. I still hop in an sc2 game from time to time, or start getting trained for AHGL season.

When I started going to the gym I went with a uni m8 who was already going 6 times a week for 3 years, so i was absolutely clueless, but he gave me routines and showed me basically everything. Tbh I do believe 80% of fitness instructors out there are full of shit and are clueless and have pretty much wrong fundamentals. They just put out the same routine to absolutely anyone that comes... you cant have someone thats for example 1.90,70kg w the same routine as someone thats 1.60, 100kg thats absurd. I' wouldve read a shit ton on forums if I didn't have someone to teach me

Reading - well don't know there are a bunch of books I could recommend, but different people would like different stuff, i literally have to force myself to read stuff like Anna Karenina, just because its considered best novel ever doesn't mean I enjoy it, but basically what I'd recommend is Terry Pratchet, Stephen KIng - The dark tower series, obviously A song of Ice and Fire series, The Black Swan by Nassim Taleb - best economics book ever, Daniel Kahnemann - Thinking fast and slow - best psychology book ever

Cooking - dunno I just find something that I think would taste cool and try to do it, haven't really tried anything hard though, but its kind of cool to be able to cook sick good food

cooking is a great skill to have, and something you can continuously improve upon even if you have it as a serious hobby for several years - and even if you just have a "learn basic cooking" as a goal then that will also greatly benefit you. Just do stuff like watch gordon ramsey's youtubes, browse pages like smittenkitchen.com, read about food and look at pictures of food that make you want to go like omg I wanna eat that, and then learn how to make it. gonna fail some times at first, but food just becomes increasingly better and better and you can improvise more and more.

my wife started being more serious about it like 3 years ago, was just regular girl-skilled then, now she literally cooks michelin star quality food (assuming equally good ingredients of course, which is kinda the hardest aspect of fine dining ).

other than that, it depends on where you live, but man, find an outdoor activity. If you live somewhere there's snow, start skiing (possibly snowboarding but I think skiing is more of a wholesome activity, not necessarily more entertaining tho. ) If in an urban region and you can't get out of it much, start playing some sport involving a ball (always more entertaining and you find yourself improving in more different ways than if you just run or lift weights or do some goal-oriented exercise imo), like football(soccer) bball raquetball. If you're living in some rural, non-snowy region, start biking. Skiing or biking should best be combined with smoking weed, like you find more beautiful outdoors areas that just yell out "man, this place is PERFECT for getting high!!" and that becomes a highlight of any trip, and motivation for going out, and you'll find yourself super happy about it.

Or you can start playing an instrument! Definitely seems more rewarding than playing lol.

And then there's the final tidbit; if you actually enjoy your time, it's not wasted. So I mean, if you start with 3 new hobbies and you find yourself getting a little swamped and not having enough time to do stuff, finding 2 hours every week to actually just play some relaxing computer game can be awesome. It's just boring when you're doing it all the time.
