UFC 178: Johnson vs Cariaso

some thoughts:
alvarez vs cerrone: key to figuring out this fight was jones vs rampage. alvarez is a better boxer than rampage and jones is ranger/better than cerrone, but thats the blueprint for beating a shorter better boxer. have seen this over and over, rory macdonald vs bj penn, rory vs nate diaz, condit vs nate diaz, the list goes on and on. i thought alvarez would have more success wrestling and be able to pull off what nate did against cerrone, but the difference was getting into range. alvarez tried to dart in and out, while diaz has that extra long reach and is a bit more willing to take some strikes to land some.

we all knew this was a perfect matchup for conor, but wow was he impressive. hes clever, fast, elusive, moves well, hits hard and reads opponents well. before the fight i said it would be a shame if he got a title shot without having to face mendes/lamas/swanson/edgar, but hes clearly in the same league as that group of fighters. i would favor mendes/edgar over him, but i think he beats lamas/swanson due to speed/fight iq advantages.

yoel unquestionably should have been DQ'ed. apparently there was some snafu with the commission asking him to be wiped down, but when hes completely rocked and out of it, start the fight or end it.

was at the gym in my apartment complex tonight and a jacked security guard comes up to me and starts talking about BJJ (i was wearing a BJJ shirt). hes a training partner of werdums, purple belt wrestler thats like 5'10 225, built like cain. basically said he thinks werdum has no chance lol

Ive been on the mcgregoat hype train since last year but Im really concerned with his lack of respect for his opponents strikes. He needs to work more on not getting tagged and I've seen him get caught with some decent shots in almost all of his fights early in the game. The guys got a good chin on him though

he moves kinda like dominic cruz. except cruz's movement feels random and to throw someone off, conor seems like hes actively cutting angles much harder. he is hittable cause he cuts it close, doesnt need to take so much risk with that big of a gap in skill, and vs better strikers needs to be more careful. but hes great

Grabbing the glove allowed Kennedy to do all that damage near the end of the round.

Its why i said Poirier is the smarter fighter, McIrishman when presented with a situation where he has to take damage in order to inflict damage would always take it, expecting that he will be more efficient I guess. Sure that s quite interesting to watch for us since there s more action going on, however I don't see why should he do such exchanges when he s the better fighter, he could potentially lose a fight which he would normally dominate cause of such trades.

I feel sorry for Tim Kennedy, you cant have like 30secs more rest what the fuck, just forfeit the fight, its the smart thing to do + its what rules are set for ....

Thats a valid point. Not sure which way is better but its not as clear as I thought.

Karmic justice is served, the much better man won the fight that night. I haven't seen anyone up in arms on this site, but on Sherdog, people are so stupid getting all mad at Romero, as if he even knew what was going on sitting there half conscious on the stool. Let's all get over it and be happy that a much more exciting and higher ceiling'ed fighter won the fight.

Kennedy is a more consistent fighter but has lower variance in terms of who he'll lose to, but also who he can beat. Romero has a much better chance against a Jacare or a Rockhold or a Weidman. Even though I think he loses to any of them and I still take Weidman >>>>>> everyone else as always.

Romero would get raped versus a healthy Weidman. I'd like to see Romero vs. Jacare, though. However, there was a recent article that came out yesterday, I think, that said Jacare is going to sit out and wait for the winner of Weidman/Vitor, which was recently postponed till sometime in 2015 (probably February 2015).

Basically, we won't be seeing Jacare for awhile.
