A friend sent me a seminar/presentation he was going to give in an academic environment.
I was stunned to see that oil is only viable for another 10-20 years. Is anyone else shocked or is this standard? Having new technologies, or old resources eliminated is nothing new. But this seems very abrupt and the whole world seems to be in the dark? Maybe too many uneducated, pandering assholes on TV proclaiming the end of oil for the past 50 years have made us all deaf? Or did we ignore an inconvenient truth...
Thoughts?
p.s: the oil industry pretty much owns 90% of solar companies/research |

its standard, in 20 years pretty much the whole world will be switched to renewable (water, wind, solar, thermo) and nuclear energy, driving electric cars etc imho |

People don't want to hear it but you're right. We need serious change and have needed it for a while. I read this article not too long ago listing some finite energy resources and how little some countries have left: http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-27435624 |

lots of cool ideas in energy lately. The solar highway system is a pretty sweet idea that went viral (at least on my facebook timeline prob yours too). Google it if you haven't seen the idea. |

they'll prob panic switch to ethanol as a quick/temp fix once the oil runs dry...most engines today can be converted fairly easily to burn ethanol.

There's plenty of oil for America to frack here in the continental united states. Problem is that it is going to trash the country's environment.
America is well-set to continue its energy boom actually. |

actually, the keystone xl will be able to sustain the world on oil until 2100. Canada has finally surpassed America in its ability to destroy the world. For people worrying about climate change, a recent study i read done at MIT predicts 3.5-7 degree temperature rise in the worst case scenario(xl keystone and the development of india/china). The worst case scenario seems pretty imminent unless there's political action by the masses, which is required if we want to be able to live in a nice environment.
New energy ideas could have a lot of money put into them, but oil companies would rather just use oil and prevent technological progress in alternative energy sources. You can make more short term profits that way.
Any visiting alien to earth would conclude that we are a species that has self-consciously tried to destroy itself. |

It's a combination of the problem being too large for people to assess/comprehend and people placing too much trust in their respective government and structure of society. It's also just so damn easy to keep doing what's already being done. It's as simple as handing over your credit card at a petrol station and filling your tank semi-anonymously then driving off.
My parents recently bought an electric car and love it. I would highly recommend it if you need a car and can get one. |

with fracking for natural gas, the U.S. can be sustained for longer (i think they are saying they can be self-sustained for 80 years at current rates?) |

solar highway is a terrible idea, plenty of roof space. Roofs don't get covered in mud, dirt, dust, sand, snow... etc. And are far less likely to break. Its an interesting idea sure, but not very practical. |

I'm pretty sure fracking is what's going to go down in the interim between setting up renewable infrastructures and oil prices rising to unsustainable levels.
It's already getting a lot of lobbying in the U.S. anyways.
Sucks, but the way society/humans tend to work I suspect we won't see a serious rollout of renewable energy implemented until things get pretty dire. |

So, if it's going to last more than 10 years we should just continue as we are? |

20 yrs? wtf guys... you guys are nuts.
Yes, I hope they start switching to clean, renewable energy, but when it comes down to it, it's all about the benjamins. Had my oil tank filled the other day, $930 bucks ffs. I'll be damned if someone is willing to offer me the same comfort of living I have for a cheaper/equal price that doesn't also pollute the environment.
I heard about the solar highway idea. Just think of the cost to implement that bad boy. Then the upkeep... I mean, it's a nice thought and all, but c'mon. Lets be realistic here.
Latest 'oil statistic' I read was that the US would be completely self-sustainable oil wise within ~30 years I think.
