Quite interesting article I found online just today, some scientists tested if the look of a man are corresponding to his intelligence. Turns out, they are :D

In a new study, both male and female subjects were able to accurately evaluate the intelligence of men simply by viewing photographs of their faces.

While many avow that you can't judge a book by its cover, researchers Karel Kleisner, Veronika Chvátalová, and Jaroslav Flegr, all based out of Charles University in the Czech Republic, showed that if that book is a man, you probably can.

For the study, which is published in PLoS ONE, 80 science students from Charles University -- 40 men and 40 women -- took an in-depth exam to gauge their IQ and were subsequently photographed with neutral face expressions. Another 160 participants assessed the photographs, judging the subjects' attractiveness and intelligence on a scale of 1 (the highest ranking) to 7 (lowest ranking).

When Kleisner, Chvátalová, and Jaroslav Flegr tore into the data, they returned an intriguing finding.

"Raters were able to estimate intelligence with an accuracy higher than chance from static facial photographs of men but not from photos of women."

Next, the team placed the photographed faces on computerized grids in an attempt to glean whether any facial features were associated with perceived intelligence.

"Faces that are perceived as highly intelligent are rather prolonged with a broader distance between the eyes, a larger nose, a slight upturn to the corners of the mouth, and a sharper, pointing, less rounded chin," the authors described. "By contrast, the perception of lower intelligence is associated with broader, more rounded faces with eyes closer to each other, a shorter nose, declining corners of the mouth, and a rounded and massive chin." But when the researchers checked to see if actual intelligence (indicated by measured IQ) was associated with specific facial features, they found no significant correlations.

"This means that our raters accurately assessed intelligence from faces of men based on visual cues that simply are not explicable from shape variability in men’s faces."

So why could both men and women accurately predict the intelligence of men, but not women, based on their looks?

One explanation the researchers put forth is that physical cues of intelligence may be sexually dimorphic. So while intelligence may be physically plastered on the faces of men, women may signal it in other ways.

While the study's principal finding merits a booze-bolstered conversation at a dinner party, it will need to be replicated among men of broader age and cultural backgrounds before we take it too seriously.

i don't think IQ has much to do with being 'smart' or 'dumb'. it's mostly just a test that tests how good you are at taking IQ tests. In other words, an extremely meaningless statistic.

Stroggoz - IQ is your ability to learn things fast etc, which in poker is huge since we are essentially doing multiplayer puzzles vs dif ppl and ppl changing strategies all the time, its important.

Wrong, its not a meaningless statistic, a well educated average person will beat 100% of the time an mentally handicapped person, to make my point extremely obvious.

You might want to question its exactitude in measuring intelligence, but intelligence is somewhat a broad word and most people that strongly dislike IQ standards comes mostly from just not wanting their intelligence to be measured and defined, imagine if tomorrow we could get a devide that instantly gave you a numerical result for your intelligence... now that would have a huge impact on our society.

Intelligence is complex and IQ tests obviously doesn't cover everything about it. However it isn't "meaningless".

A good anology would be, if you wanted to buy a racing car, and you could test its Max speed and acceleration, those 2 things alone won't guarentee you have the best racing car, but it does give a pretty good clue.

But i think there are some people with average IQs who can perform very good in life, due to good education and being hard workers, and some people with higher IQs who do poorly in life, due to poor education and being lazy. There are also important parts of intelligence (such as social intelligence) which those tests doesn't test.

You can actually be quite a retard, and good in Poker. It's pretty normal to be insane at a few things and suck at others if there's something majorly wrong with you. A damaged hippocampus or how you spell it can turn people into mathematical geniuses, but then they become newb at other stuff.

Back a 100 years, people used to calculate intelligence on 3 criteras I think, numbers, solving word puzzles and finding the next piece of a puzzle. Which today is seen as a load of crack!!

More prominent professors and shit talk about 10 - 12 things that are really important to determine intelligence, and go into things as personal intelligence, how we navigate through our environment, how we treat ourselves, and a lot of stuff I can't remember right now (to lazy to google).

A lot of physicists believe that one of the best way to tell if someone is really intelligent, is by simple test, such as the marshmellow tests when we're a kid, and something similar to that, but more advanced when we're an adult. The ability to think long term, and avoid instant gratification smartly, making choices that are best for us in the long term.
