Just something I found interesting - some SuperNova Elite stats for 2013, info posted by a PokerStars representative on 2+2.

PokerStars has revealed that 371 players managed to accumulate at least 1 million VPPs in 2013 and earned the elite Supernova Elite VIP status. Compared to 2012, where 375 players accomplished that, the difference is marginal.

PokerStars representative Gareth also revealed the top five VPP totals for 2013:
    4,501,829
    4,000,000
    3,562,368
    3,000,080
    2,512,858

To be honest, I expected this number to be smaller, SNE means that a player raked around $170k for PS (earning SNE makes u ~105-115k, so deduct that if you are thinking about rooms profit).

I have no clue how fucking hard u have to play for 4,5mln VPP, this is beyond sick and I wish I had 1/4 of that work ethic.

I assume all of if not most of the top 5 are SNG regs. 4.5 million is so ridiculous though, I don't know how you can have the motivation for that SNG or not.

Second person on the listl, with exact 4mln VPPs is George ‘Jorj95’ Lind, Team Online player.
He posted that screenshot:

So sick. He also ran some kind of challenge last year, making 1mln vpp's while losing 10 punds and ending WITH PROFIT.

the sickest thing about George Lind is that he has a wife and kids.... so he makes millions of vpps, loose an amount of weight most people cant in their entire lives, and still has time for his family wtf.

#1 is a hyperturbo grinder from Russia, Shabalinvlad.

This year he wants to get 7M VPPs...

For me its interesting that despite losing money in the game, these guys are still coming out way ahead because of the VIP system. Would be tough to grind day in and day out knowing that you are losing and just grinding for that rakeback, I wonder what % of these ppl are actually winners without the sne rb?

you're looking at it wrong man. They are winners, as in they comfortably beat their opposition.
e.g. a guy breaking even long term at NL50 pre-rakeback beats the people at the limit for some 8bb/100.
With high rakeback you just have to beat people for lower winrate, I really doubt rakeback pros think any less of themselves or have any reason to even if they'd show you at first glance a depressing breakeven pre rb graph

The idea of breaking even and making over 125k just in bonuses isnt too bad.

this isn't really how i interpreted his post, i don't think he was trying to marginalize their accomplishments or say it's not worthwhile for people losing at -0.07bb/100 or whatever to get SNE and make good money.

yes they may be winning players in that they beat their opposition, but they're still losing more than winning on a day-to-day basis with rake factored in, and the psychology of dealing with that seems like it would be uniquely challenging, even if you know you're in the process of making 6 figures.

its going to be tough in the next couple years since stars will slowly be bleeding the whole vpp thing dry. I mean, they even fucked with the 235 sunday storm sattys, which was already watered down from the 2010 version. each time they want to cut costs, the vpp system and all its benefits are the first to get hit.

unless you're truly making bank doing the vpp grinding exclusively, better have plan b in place.
