Rake indeed kills at stud8 and O8. It's significantly worse than regular limit holdem due to more showdowns. It's still beatable at mid stakes but for very small winrates (.5 to 1 BB/100).
At triple draw you can achieve winrates better than holdem. Its a high variance game though. You need a pretty large sample size to get an accurate winrate. |

A friend of mine plays mid-high stakes L08 and explained to me a lot of the skills required. Basically yes, a lot of split pots so the skill really comes down to controlling pot sizes when involved in a hand. Eg. If you can only win half the pot you want to keep the pot smaller and if you have a split and a chance to improve to a scoop then you need to increase the pot size. Many amateurs do not consider both current hand equity and chance to improve, so will put in a lot of money with hands that chop 90% of the time but get scooped the other 10% (effectively a -ev play). Because so many chopped pots you are showing down a lot of the time so the standard deviation from your expectation is quite high. Also if there is any chance at being quartered your hand sucks. |
