That clip looks very familiar, although I don't remember this 'Wire' thing (even though it sounds very familiar, it's something big, right?). Video - as 99% of everything in pop culture that has chess in it - is cringe-worthy, that's why I remember I guess.
My favourite line is Bet/Fold. I bet, you fold.

I lose the hand, and all my chips. Because I went !allin instead of !call, apparently my entire 32,000 chips were on the line even though no one could match it (27,000 chip difference)

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us and as we let our own lights shine we unconsciously give other people permision to do the same

That clip is not about chess, it's about the game.
And the game is the game.
Always.

Really? I tried to watch the shield a few times and thought it was pretty boring. It seemed more like a fast paced lots of action shallow that you watch while you do something else ( like play poker. )
Also thought the characters were pretty cartoonish and cheesy and had no depth.
Couldn't get passed like 5 episodes though, so maybe it gets better.
Everyone looks for different things in their entertainment though.

In the years following the end of the series' run, several colleges and universities such as Johns Hopkins, Brown University, and Harvard College have offered classes on The Wire in disciplines ranging from law to sociology to film studies. Phillips Academy, a boarding high school in Massachusetts, offers a similar course as well.[98][99] University of Texas at San Antonio offers a course where the series is taught as a work of literary fiction.[100] In an article published in The Washington Post, Anmol Chaddha and William Julius Wilson explain why Harvard chose The Wire as curriculum material for their course on urban inequality: "Though scholars know that deindustrialization, crime and prison, and the education system are deeply intertwined, they must often give focused attention to just one subject in relative isolation, at the expense of others. With the freedom of artistic expression, The Wire can be more creative. It can weave together the range of forces that shape the lives of the urban poor."101] University of York's Head of Sociology, Roger Burrows, said in The Independent that the show "makes a fantastic contribution to their understanding of contemporary urbanism", and is "a contrast to dry, dull, hugely expensive studies that people carry out on the same issues".[102] The series is also studied as part of a Master seminar series at the Paris West University Nanterre La Défense.[103]

The Shield is one of the few tv shows that get progressivly better, you should give it a try, i think both shows are on equal quality, maybe the wire has better script but the shield is more entertaining.

The wire is the most educational show about how power/class systems function in todays society.. it's cause and effect on civilization. it's very entertaining too. The show certainly taught me more about how the world works than school did, so i can see why universities would want to have courses based around it.
