Julian Assange: Ecuador grants Wikileaks founder asylum
Ecuador has granted asylum to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange two months after he took refuge in its London embassy while fighting extradition from the UK.
It cited fears that Mr Assange's human rights might be violated.
Foreign Secretary William Hague said the UK would not allow Mr Assange safe passage out of the country.
But Ecuador's Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said his government would seek to negotiate with Britain over arrangements for Mr Assange to leave.
"We don't think it is reasonable that, after a sovereign government has made the decision of granting political asylum, a citizen is forced to live in an embassy for a long period," he said.

I think it's unlikely that he will make it out of England. |

Pretty interesting situation and I hope the UK doesn't decide to enter the embassy to arrest him. It does look like he's not leaving there any time soon but maybe something can be worked out ? |

They cant decide that ... that would lead to a international scandal. You cant just enter someone's embassy to force someone out of it. It's not your territory |

Good luck to him. If this happened in the 1990s, he would have been killed already. (obv) |

The UK Foreign Office had warned, in a note, that it could lift the embassy's diplomatic status to fulfil a "legal obligation" to extradite the 41-year-old by using the Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act 1987.
That allows the UK to revoke the diplomatic status of an embassy on UK soil, which would potentially allow police to enter the building to arrest Mr Assange for breaching the terms of his bail. |

There is absolutely no way in a million years that Hague will order the embassy to be stormed; let's knock that one on the head. The law he was referring to was put in place in regards to the shooting of a policewoman from the libyan embassy which is a whole diffrerent caliber of incident to this. He was just dropping it in for the sake of pressure, and is now backing away from all references to it, probably regretting going there.
In terms of Assange, he's in a funny position. I wonder if he'd go if the Swedish government were able to give him guarantees of no extradition to the US, which I'm not sure they can do anyway. |

Government can probably not grant that. I'm too lazy to look it up if there are some special whatever crap about international affairs but I'm like 95%+ sure that our constitution does not allow anyone to give out guarantees that we can't extradite people.
That said it wouldn't matter. We've got a horrible record when it comes to this stuff. Despite managing to take in a ton of refugees and generally fuck that up fairly badly we still manage to send people who tries to enter our countries to various dictatorships where they get tortured for being politically active/gay/different in some way. We're actually one of the worst countries in the western world when it comes to that crap according to what I've heard. |
