I listen to music from dawn to dusk, and I had an interesting conversation with my teachers, who I take for intellectuals (high end education) and that teacher talks about Jazz/Blues/Hip Hop, their origins and It was actually very interesting until he argued that music nowadays is more or less dead. Nothing new is invented, no new genre of music that is... And when you turn on the radio, you know what he means.

genres aren't really the issue here.
the issue is the combination of harmony melody and rhythm in a unique way, which indeed doesn't happen too much anymore. If you take a pop song and add heavy guitars it's not different music,it's only a different genre
new shit has come to light... a-and... shit! man...

I m glad there r songs like Gotye's that come up every couple of years ... cant imagine living in Pink Floyd's or Rainbow's or any of the great rock bands era ... that would've been cool musicwise

As music gets older there is bound to be repetition and less origional production, it's like how almost all films nowadays are variations of a story that have already been told. It doesn't mean music is dead, just that origional music is that bit more impressive.
alot of repetitive melodies and sounds, in time where music is mass produced. Alot of good music that has to be found in a jungle of junk music.
The progression/evolution is there , ofc

The biggest tilts in music today are the fact that millions of people love Justin Beiber and people still buy Chris Brown's music. Fk them both.
In terms of evolution, many Hiphop/RnB/Pop stars are incorporating more House/Electronic styles of music.
Oh yeah, Pitbull and Nicki Minaj are also fkn retarded.

You have a point here, I thought about it myself, if you think of the Rock'n'Roll who was frowned upon when it emerged in the 50's for it was considered "subversive" and immoral. And now it is looked back as one of the golden age of music. But then, if we accept your point of view, we must admit that Bieber/Gaga and their kinds do good music ? I have trouble with that, not because they are commercially successful does it imply they're actually good musicians nor their songs are any good in any way...Makes me think of Matheson's "I'm Legend" which challenges the idea of the mass vs individual and what is normality ? Also give some credit to genres.. I mean just look at the evolution within Jazz and everyday lot's of great stuff both classic and more experimental come out and it's still awesome.
Perfecting a genre, or exploring it, or however you want to put it is still an awesome way to make new music in my eyes.

If you want good music you just have to look a little.. A lot of independent stuff out there is very good imo.
I'm not saying good music doesn't exist anymore, there are still very good musicians out there I could cite hundreds but my contention is that they don't make it to the top of charts today which are saturated with shitty computer based and autotuned songs. Your point about jazz is interesting but you agree that perfecting a genre is different than creating a new genre ?

And I think most of what is popular is popular because it is popular... Just mass produce and make money.

I had the same conversation as the OP with friends. There was a time that Hendrix, Beatles,... were actually the popular music. Then corporations got involved to make big money off the music industry and the "performers" replaced musicians. So instead of artists and art people got into celebrities and fame. Ever since then its been down hill. Madonna, boy bands, Spears. Then when you thought that we can't go lower than that you got Bieber and MileyCyrus.
We had a couple of good musicians that have also contributed to this downward slope. Like Elvis or Metallica, but in general the popular "music" is not about music anymore.

That particular version of the song when performed live was not well received because many critics called it slow and boring or sth like that. But CeeLo didn't care anyways. Thats one reason that I like Cee Lo, he tried not to give a shit about public.
PS: I have gone to live performances, does that count as paying for music?

No, there are almost no "active" artists that I support today. I can only think of Mark Knopfler but even for him I don't buy the records. I do however buy merchandise like T-Shirts from his site. I think that way the artist actually gets the money directly rather than getting small royalty from the record company. I might be wrong even on that though.

NOBODY is denying that there is more music today. So I agree that there is more good music. But you are an idiot if you are saying that the taste of general population have not deteriorated GREATLY in the past 30-40 years. that is a FACT. Just comparethis 70s list with this recent list
You will notice in the first list they are ALL musicians[write their own songs] and the list is ALL about music. the 2011 list they are almost ALL females. And with the exception of Adele, its all about sex symbolism and has nothing to do with music. And then again they almost ALL performers[other people write their songs] and not musicians.
So yes more people are making crative music in their basements today. Has nothing to do with the main point of the thread. We are talking about the music industry and the populations taste in music.

Quick glance and I see Minimal Wave, Coldwave, Post-Punk, Synthpop, Deathrock, Darkwave and a bunch more missing.
Also, music is not dead. It is only artists who are more and more incapable as time goes by. Using the radio to judge anything is dumb because mainstream culture always has it completely wrong.

i purchase pretty much all of my music.
used to download copious amounts of music in college but once i got on the apple train and had some poker monies i valued the ease of use, organization, aesthetics and time more than the money.
/not so thinly veiled brag
but seriously, i've tried to go back to my college days of being ahead of the curve on all that stuff at times and i always quickly get annoyed so don't do that anymore.
pro tip:
if you are a music guy and tilted:
-absorb some good green in absorption method of choice (optional)
-get lost in itunes adventure so your consciousness is focused on how insanely amazing your itunes adventure is and not how much money you just lost
-spend like a buyin or w/e.
you will feel a lot better getting a buyin in the middle w/ 100+% roi and the experience that goes w/ it than generally getting a buyin or so in not so good at the tables.
