I've just gotten into watching MMA and I've watched UFC ~115-present and I still don't know a lot of names. This looks like a nice card though.

Henderson > Edgar (Henderson will either smother Edgar to win via UD or win by sub in later rounds, or Edgar will be too fast and get a UD in later rounds. I think Henderson is prepared for "Speedy Gonzalez".)
Rampage > Bader (Always bet on black.)
Kongo > Hunt (I'm worried that Hunt might land one of his wild haymakers that could connect and finish Kongo. If Kongo plays it smart with fighting from a distance and picking up and scooping Hunt to the ground when he tries to get inside, he can win like that. I don't think we'll see a Kongo vs. Barry style match.)
Shields > Akiyama (Shields chin has been tested, but Akiyama isn't UFC material, and he's been fed to the wolves in his last 3 UFC fights.)
Boetsch > Okami (Boetsch is probably the underdog in this fight on paper, but since he moved down to 185 he's shown to have superior strength over his opponents, and he can take punishment to the head.)
Palaszewski > Hioki (If Bart connects with a jab, it's over. Hioki was hyped up in his first UFC fight like all other Japanese fighters, but his fight was the most disgusting display I saw last year from a hyped fighter.)
Pettis > Lauzon (Pettis is better than Lauzon in every area, some might say Lauzon has the BJJ advantage, but Pettis is good with BJJ as well. If Lauzon cant finish Pettis within 2 minutes, it's over.)
Gomi > Mitsuoka
Yamamoto > Lee (Last chance for Yamamoto, I think he'll be hungry and powered up by his local fans, at least I hope.)
Fukuda > Cantwell
Mizugaki > Cariaso
Tiequan > Tamura

Don't forget, Bendo is half Korean, so he'll have the judges on his side considering the fight is taking place in Asia. Or does that only work for Japanese fighters?

Fight won't be close enough for Bendo to get a robbery.

Prime Sherk or Gray Maynard 2x, both way better wrestlers than Bendo, couldn't take down Edgar. Penn got him down into full mount and Frankie got right back up in about 5 seconds. That's crazy.

Bendo couldn't take down Jamie Varner for 3 rounds and had a hell of time getting down Pettis. He's definitely improved since then but I highly doubt enough to take down and control Edgar consistently.

Meanwhile Guida, Jim Miller, Pettis, Shane Roller, my sister and my pet rabbit have all dropped Bendo with punches. None of whom are half the striker Edgar is.

The surprise van is coming to give Bendo a ride and it won't be taking him to church. He's gonna get haped.

During Joe Rogan's podcast today, he said that Alex Caceres was kicked in the head hard in the 1st round in yesterday's match, and he didn't believe it when he asked his corner what round it was and they told him that was the 3rd round. Rogan thinks Alex was fighting rounds 2 and 3 on instinct. I haven't found an interview with Caceres yet, since he lost the fight by split decision.

The reason why this was brought up on the podcast was cuz they were having a discussion on concussions.

Main Card

Frankie Edgar (14-1-1) vs. Ben Henderson (15-2) (Lightweight Championship)

I have no idea about this fight, I'm having a hard time figuring out how they match up, but it's the first fight with Frankie that I'm really looking forward too. I think it can be really good. I think Edgar probably takes it though.

Quinton Jackson (32-9) vs. Ryan Bader (13-2) (Light Heavyweight)

I'm guessing Rampage all the way unless Bader decides to wrestlefuck him.

Mark Hunt (7-7) vs. Cheick Kongo (17-6-2) (Heavyweight)

Really hoping Kongo gets KTFO which he will if he keeps it standing. Guessing Kongo will go for takedowns though, and he'll probably take it that way.

Yoshihiro Akiyama (13-4) vs. Jake Shields (26-6-1) (Welterweight)

Sheilds will rebound nicely. I think he's much better then he looked against the other Jake.

Yushin Okami (26-6) vs. Tim Boetsch (14-4) (Middleweight)

Okami is a better version of Boetsch.

Hatsu Hioki (25-4) vs. Bart Palaszewski (36-14) (Featherweight)

Hioki by sub. He's probably really motivated to do good and he won't be jet lagged this time.

Anthony Pettis (14-2) vs. Joe Lauzon (21-6) (Lightweight)

Not sure, like both guys, going to go out on a limb and say Lauzon by sub but that's mostly a feeling.

Preliminary Card

Takanori Gomi (32-8) vs. Eiji Mitsuoka (18-7-2) (Lightweight)
Norifumi Yamamoto (18-5) vs. Vaughan Lee (11-7-1) (Bantamweight)
Riki Fukuda (17-5) vs. Steve Cantwell (7-5) (Middleweight)
Takeya Mizugaki (15-6-2) vs. Chris Cariaso (12-3) (Bantamweight)

Zhang Tiequan (15-2) vs. Issei Tamura (6-2) (Featherweight)

I'm guessing Gomi and Kid got easy fights so that the home crowd will be hyped for the main card. Fukuda isn't very good but Cantwell has looked like shit lately. Don't know much about the rest of the fights but I'll go with Mizugaki and Tiequan.

Hampage got wrestle fucked by Shad. That's about it though. And Shad is one of the very best MMA wrasslers at LHW these days.

That said Baders MMA wrestling is pretty average and it's highly unlikely he can wrestle fuck Hampage. Plus Shad beat Hampage with great level changes and speed in his takedowns, meanwhile Bader is a strength wrestler which is exactly where Hampage excels in his TDD.

I got Hampage as the favorite, but honestly wouldn't be that surprised if Bader beats him with a mixture of striking and clinch work. Hampage is super one dimensional these days and incredibly easy to game plan against and doesn't fight with any type of fire and generally seems unmotivated. So while Hampage is more skilled, Bader can easily win by just being a lot less retarded than Hampage.

Also....

Hampage.

I got Merge HeroPoker money but other than that... bank wire fee's are more than the bet lol.

Also have no interest in taking Bader > Hampage. I said I thought Hampage was the favorite, just wouldn't be surprised to see rampage lose due to being retarded.

Do you use Wells Fargo? Same bank to bank transfers are possible.

If yes, we can make it $20 since there's no bet on the black monsta.

Edgar > Henderson
There is a reason he's the best fighter at lightweight. He beat a legend (BJ Penn) twice as a huge underdog and showed incredible resilience against maynard. Though henderson is good, I think he's just outmatched here.

Jackson > Bader
There is no shame getting owned by Jon Jones. Jackson is still a great fighter even though he's getting older and I think his experience and power will give him an advantage over Bader.

Kongo > Hunt
Last time I watched Hunt he gassed out hard. Not very knowledgeable about their exact fighting styles but when in doubt I pick the big, intimidating black guy.

Shields > Akiyama
Sure he lost to GSP and Jake Ellenburger but Shields has an excellent resume and ground game. I feel he's gonna have his way with Akiyama on the ground the entire fight.

Okami > Boetsch
Being a top three middleweight in the division has to account for something. Silva makes everybody look like shit, but against normal fighters Okami is one of the best. I think he'll use his experience and strength to pull this one out.

Hyoki <> Palaszewski
No idea. I don't care about this one.

Pettis > Lauzon
I love watching Lauzon and was impressed with his submission on Guillard. Unfortunately, Pettis has a solid ground game to combat lauzon and I think he is much better in that department.

Have a small bet on Edgar $125 at -125. Just a hunch but not really a solid read. Not really a good card for bets, missed out on all the good lines when they came out. Maybe I'll go small on Rampage at -245. Hunt hit +280 at one point which could have been a decent bet.

I actually think Akiyama has a good chance here.. Shields is grossly overrated imo. I've yet to see a good fight from him ever since he moved down to UFC Welterweight. Akiyama looks ripped at Welter and not short and stocky like he did @ Middle and I think he has an edge in stand-up. Interesting fight with ton of variables. We don't know how Akiyama is cardio is now that he's lost weight, who can take who down?, etc etc. Also can't forget that Akiyama is a Olympic gold-medal Judoka, we just never seen him use it now for some reason... He seems to like standing up and putting on a performance.

Cant quite grasp how this fight goes. I can see Akiyama knocking out Shields quickly or win a decision after 3 rounds of mostly stand up. But then I can also see him gassing quickly and getting subbed.

Edit: There's also the fight being in Japan thing. Jet lag is always an issue. The fight just smells so much like an upset.

If Akiyama somehow pulls this one out, there might be a chance that we see Akiyama vs Nick Diaz somewhere in the future lol. Nick will prob win but there will definitely be a awesome fight in that cage. Also would not be surprised to see Akiyama retire after fighting Shields regardless of the result.

This topic made me think of Denis Kang (lost to Akiyama a long time ago when people were saying Kang was one of the best in the world). He is on a three fight losing streak outside of the UFC, hurts to look at. Nothing but a shell of the man he was before his fiancee killed herself.

Didn't know that about him, thats a horrible shame.

He always struck me as someone who had great individual skills, but when against good competition/pressure always kind of fell apart in fights. Was also inconsistent against lower tier guys as well.

Hopefully he has enough reputation to be well off with his own gym or something of the like.

I'd wish him luck on turning his career around but he's 34, and has been fighting a really long time with a huge number of fights and his last two were TKO losses. So it's probably about time to hang them up.

I do agree that he's amazing now but first he killed BJ which got me a little bit upset (I like BJ) and before that I just saw him as a boring dude without power. It's mostly since his last two Maynard fights I've gotten to like him. I think I'm really biased against smaller dude's unless they're submission grapplers or KO artists. Don't really like small dudes with wrestling. I know that's stupid because they put up a lot of good fights but I dunno, guess I'll have to learn.

My top pics as far as small dudes goes in terms of "I want to watch them" would be something like:

Jung Chan-Sung, for obvious reasons, Aoki for being a submission wizard crybaby that looks funny, Jimy Hettes who's hype train I'm and Barao (spelling?) for being such a bad ass.

I kind of think Rashad managed to wrestlefuck him a little bit. At least a quickie each round. Bader is probably a worse wrestler then Rashad as far as takedowns in MMA goes, but I just threw it out there. Not sure how motivated Rampage is but he's not getting beat on the feet by some guy with power and a decent overhand right. I agree with stim that he might just put him against the cage and bore the fuck out of everyone though.

Rush   United States. Feb 23 2012 03:42. Posts 2299

Meh I mean even though Rashad took Rampage down and what not, if Rampage wasn't such a little bitch now he had his chance to finish him. I'm sure he'll have way more openings against Bader, who got basically KO'ed by Tito before getting Subbed. I used to love Bader, but he hasn't really improved all that much....

hendo vs edgar

Edgar is a great fighter with a giant heart and all but his last few fights have just been really really close, with even the questionable first fight vs bj. This category is stacked with great fighters who seem pretty evenly matched and hendo has found a way to actually dominate a few of them, the last two fights clearly dominating guida and miller who are at the top of the ladder as far as quality fighters goes. He dominated them not by some lucky punch but through 3 grueling rounds. He just seems stronger and hungrier than the rest. I'd give him the edge in this fight, specially if the weight difference between both will be significant.

rampage vs bader

This fight seems closer than oddsmakers are saying. Both fighters are limited in skills but Bader is younger and more motivated, while rampage has been going to interviews with words of 'retiring in a near future' and 'doesnt care if win or lose just wants a bang'.

funny interview with rampage talking smack on joe rogan:

Hunt for those odds is a definite bet, yes he will gas and if this goes to a decision Kongo will win it every time, However Hunt is far more dangerous with his hands than Kongo, Kong will try to stay outside his range and pick him apart but i think Kongo is very bad at that.

Hunt is actually more dangerous Pat Barry but with less gas, and Barry had that fight in the pocket, its very easy to catch Kongo when he is running and he gets caught up in a more aggressive fight than he wants to very easily

Actually Kongo has a pretty good track record recently of taking down strikers and beating them up on the ground. He's used his offensive wrestling a lot more than people think. Not sure why he didn't in the Pat Barry fight. Maybe it was because Pat Barry was so short he was worried about getting under his center of gravity or something. Aside from Pat though, pretty much every single striker he's faced he's taken down for the vast majority of the match. Even strikers much lower level than him like Buentello.

But yea in general Kongo takes down strikers, and he should be plenty good enough to take down hunt and beat him up on the ground.

That said +280 I guess would be pretty close.

Well Mark Hunt is even shorter than Pat Barry and a better striker, but yeah i wasnt thinking about kongo taking it to the ground, im not knowledgeable enough to know how hard is take somebody much smaller than you down, but if thats the reason why he didnt do it with Pat Barry then he is in trouble now.

The shorter guy usually has the stronger base. Being short comes in real handy in collegiate wrestling, just look at all the top wrestlers within the past 2 years inside the UFC, they're all the shortest guys in their weight class.

Why I think Rampage will retire from MMA after UFC 144

- He's been talking about retiring for awhile.
- He said he was fighting to get his belt back.
- During the post-fight interview while inside the octagon and in the post-fight press conference, he said he trained the hardest he ever trained for his fight against Jon Jones. (Rampage didn't have anything for Jones, even when Rampage was at his best.)
- Rampage will never get another title shot, because he'd have to beat at least 2 top 5 fighters in a row before he faced Jon Jones again. Ryan Bader is a fight that will put him back into the Win column where he can go on to fight bigger people after this fight or have a Win/Loss on his record to retire to.
- After his loss to Jon Jones, he begged Dana White to put him on the UFC Japan card (UFC 144), which is where his career was built. (Both Dana and Rampage said that Rampage begged for the Japan spot.)
- Fighting in front of the country/people where you made your career for one last time, especially after you've been away from them for 6 years, it is the perfect way to retire, win or lose.
- Rampage did a 45 minute interview with Ariel Helwani, where they both walked around the city of what I think is Tokyo and talked about his life/MMA/etc. Click Here
- Rampage went to the weigh-ins earlier today weighing 211 pounds, so he was 5 pounds overweight and would be deducted 20% of his prize purse, which is a lot of money for him, which goes to Ryan Bader.

Why I think he might not retire!!

He's earning stupid amounts to fight, he's really popular and famous, so he attracts a lot of viewers. Ufc is a businiss after all.

He didn't really beg Dana, he's just being really humble about it, after his loss to JOnes, in the backrooms when he was getting stiched up, he apologized to Dana and asked for Japan, Dana replied quickly, saying sure, I'll fix.

Ok, not many reasons lol. Not sure what he makes, but in my head I'm picturing he's one of the people who get the most,so if he's raking in millions, maybe he'll go on a few more fights. Maybe fight Shogun if he wins. Although maybe retire if he loses to Bader xD.

plus, I don't think Henderson can win by decision, so if he never wins by decision I'm basic freeroling the fight

Soooo gamboooly. And i wouldn't say that Henderson can't win a decision here... Frankie is super tough, will be extremely hard for Benson to finish even if Bendo is super dominate like he was vs Miller and Guida.

- UFC 144 weigh-in photos: http://mmajunkie.com/news/27573/ufc-1...os-an-mmajunkie-com-image-gallery.mma

- Kongo (6'4, 229 pounds, 82 inch reach) vs. Hunt (5'10, 264 pounds, 74 inch reach)
Kongo @ UFC 144: 229 pounds (N/A)
Kongo @ UFC 137: 234 pounds (win)
Kongo @ UFC Live: Kongo vs. Barry: 234 pounds (win)
Kongo @ UFC 120: 228 (draw)
Kongo @ UFC Live: Vera vs. Jones: 237 pounds (win)

- If Henderson wins, it will be by Decision or late round Submission, most likely a Decision.
If Edgar wins, it will be by Decision. If Edgar doesn't land a perfect button shot to wobble Henderson then swarm him, he wont KO/TKO Henderson or submit him, Henderson's got a good chin.

boom 1-0. very satisfying because I watched a little tape on tamura and thought "he is going to beat a bum like zhang". if i were a serious bettor i would probably try to watch 2-3 recent fights of every guy on every card. its amazing how much the lines reflect how well known a guy is and how easy it is to see who will win when you just watch a few fights from them

my picks:
tamura +213
mizugaki -191
fukuda -273
vaughn lee +273
mitsuoka +191
pettis -222
hioki -149

Fukuda > Cantwell (Cantwell is on a 4 loss streak in the UFC, I dunno why he's being kept around.)
Mizugaki > Cariaso
Tiequan > Tamura

Gomi was hurt in the last minute of round 1, Mitsuoka saw this and swarmed him, getting his back. Gomi was trying to recover when Mitsuoka got his back, lucky the round was almost over when that happened.

Gomi's corner told him Mitsuoka looked tired at the end of round 1, and Gomi came out hard and fast in round 2, Mitsuoka turned into a punching bag. gg

Hopefully Akiyama retires. He barely even threw any punches in this fight, but looked good in defending punches and take downs.

Edit: Actually, I take it back, Akiyama didn't look good in defending punches, it was the fact that Shields boxing sucks so much dick, Shields is the worst boxer in the Welterweight division. Akiyama basically looked great in defending take downs, and not much else.

nope the way the judges scored it even if the last 30 seconds didnt happen sexy woulda lost 30-27 unanimously since jake had rd 3 in my books even b4 that last 30 seconds. Even if Jake lost rd 3 the judges all had him winning the first two.

$65,000 to each fighter for win bonuses

Fight of the Night: Ben Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar
Knock Out: Anthony Pettis
Submission: Vaughan Lee

Takeya Mizugaki received a win bonus for his loss against Chris Cariaso.

I'll post the YouTube video when the conference is over, they put it up right away. The UFC website stream is working, but not the YouTube stream.

Funny thing about it is how massive the risk was in basing that arm
but at the same time he was almost guaranteed to be knocked out by landing on his forehead had he not.

That .gif really has the best angle to see that had he not based out he would have gone at a terrible, terrible
angle with all of Rampage behind him directly on his head.

So sad to see Rampage lose this though, that would have been a Dream KO™ at a Dream location™.

I mean Bader fell like a retard there. More people need to do white belt level judo, where they teach you how to fall when being tossed or slammed. Basing like that is the absolute worst way to fall.

^ Since you brought up BJ, think of how terrible he'd do vs. Bendo.

Bendo never gasses in his fights, has good submission defense, and can take a lot of punishment. BJ wont be able to survive with the top 5 Lightweights, just purely on his lack of a gas tank.

I would like to see BJ vs. Maynard, as both like to stand and trade, with BJ having the better BJJ skills and Maynard having the better wrestling, and both tend to gas in/after round 2.

Give BJ a fight against Shane Roller/Sam Stout/Matt Wiman, so he can get back in the win column vs. a seasoned fighter, then have him face someone like Yves Edwards/Thiago Tavares/George Sotiropoulos to get a higher profile second win, then face Gray Maynard.

Had Edgar winning.

I think people easily forget or don't know Hunt's history. He has literally fought a who's who of MMA legends at pretty much their peak. I think it's fair to say that anyone else could and probably would have lost most of those fights at the time.

BJ won't be able to survive with the top 5 lightweights? What crack are you smoking man.

well not anymore, however he is high as fuck if he thinks bj at his prime didn't mop the floor with the division.

I don't really see how people thought Edgar won? (I'm not saying this based on stupid shit like he looked more hurt afterwards or whatever) but after watching the fight again, I could see how you could say he won Round 1 (very close though) and Round 2 (though I still think Henderson wins it since it was close + the end of the round) I'd say you could also give Edgar Round 5, but overall I only thought he won the 1st and lost the others. Once again it was damn close and I'd say it helps to NOT listen to the commentary since they usually hop on one guys bandwagon and beat it into the ground. (Ala saying Edgar looks terrible and is all busted up vs Henderson looking 100%) Some people cut up easily, some don't. It's kind of ridiculous.

Do you even know what DK stands for?

BJ can beat most of the Lightweight division, but he wont ever win the belt back, and he wont ever be top 5 in the Lightweight division again, nor do I think he could beat Bendo/Pettis/Edgar/Nate Diaz/Jim Miller. I'd like to see him vs. both Maynard and Jim Miller though, would be nice.

BJ isn't washed up, he just hasn't evolved with the rest of the top fighters at Lightweight.

^ so there's still a chance he'll evolve and catch up then?

PuertoRican   United States. Feb 28 2012 02:48. Posts 13044

^ Probably not. BJ is a veteran, and he hasn't even improved his cardio after all this time, which is something all other all time great champions have done in the past. (afaik)

I don't know his whole life schedule, but from a fans perspective, I can say that he needs to get off of the island and go train with a top team, not stay on the island and be the best person in your camp while training up and coming Hawaiian fighters.

skills wise BJ is the best hands down at 155. if he fought bendo for 5 minutes he would be a huge favorite. probably a decent chance at finishing bendo. people forget just how good bj is on the ground. the man can take ANYONE in mma's back in a matter of seconds, and bendo gives up his back pretty easily

guy just cant fight for more than a round at a strenuous pace.
