After 8 gruelling play days, 9 players have guaranteed themselves a shot at the No-Limit Hold'em World Championship title. Out of the nine heroes, we have 6 American players, 2 Canadians and 1 Italian. Now that the final table is set, the Main Event will go on a close to 4-month break, just like in the most recent editions. On the first fortnight of November they will get together again and see who will come out of the Rio $8,944,138 richer!
Canadian Jonathan Duhamel currently leads the field with 65,975,000 chips, roughly 20 million more than his nearest opponent, John Dolan. Following are Joseph Cheong, John Racener, Matthew Jarvis, Filippo Candio and Michael Mizrachi, with chip stacks ranging between 23,500,000 and 14,500,000. The smaller stacks are Soi Nguyen and Jason Senti, with 9,650,000 and 7,625,000 respectively. The average stack size is 24,936,000 in chips, and the fun will resume with blinds at 250,000-500,000 with a 50,000 ante. Each one of these guys are guaranteed at least $811,823, which is the payout for 9th place.
Only one player among the nine finalists has won a bracelet in their poker career. It's Michael 'the Grinder' Mizrachi, who has been having a tremendous performance in the series. The Grinder won the $50,000 Poker Players Championship for a $1,559,046 payout, and final tabled two $10,000 events: the Seven Card Stud Championship and the Limit Hold'em Championship, finishing in 6th and 8th place respectively. Mizrachi is still in the race for the Player of the Year award. His opponent is current leader Frank Kassela, who doesn't have a choice other than to wait the whole thing to finish.
Apart from Michael Mizrachi and John Racenet, the other finalists are not very experienced players when it comes to live tournaments. John Dolan and Joseph Cheong, especially the first, have solid results in online tournaments, and they are 2nd and 3rd in chips, so keep an eye on them. The chip leader, Jonathan Duhamel, is an experienced online player as well, as he plays NL1000-NL2000 on Everest Poker. Skill comparisons aside, Mizrachi is in a similar situation to the one Phil Ivey faced last year. Let's see if he will overcome the chip difference and impose his game on the other finalists.
ESPN’s coverage of this year’s WSOP is scheduled to begin airing on July 20th. They will air the Main Event from August 10th, with the final table being aired the day after it's concluded, on November 9th. This year, ESPN is showing 32 original episodes of WSOP coverage.
