In a 9-hour battle for the top prize, it was the Portugese pro who bested players like Dario Minieri, Ludovic "Cutsss" Lacay and Arnaud Mattern to get his birthday present half an hour before his actual birthday (which is today).
It all started with a chiplead for Dario Minieri (359,500 chips, just ahead of Sergey Shcherbatskiy and Nico Behling. The shortstack was Michael Muheim (89,000) and Cutsss was doing pretty well with 296,500 chips. Thus it was no surprise to see Michael Muheim leave first. After Shcherbatskiy limped preflop from mid position, Muheim shoved with A9o from the big blind. The Russian however, was looking for just that, as he called quickly and showed pocket aces. That Ludovic Lacay had to be the next one eliminated was a big disappointment. When he got his money in in a reraised pot on a -board, his pocket aces were up against Nico Behling's set of eights. No help from turn and river and another dream was shattered.
Andrea Benelli was the next player to leave, after his pocket jacks got beaten by Dario Minieri's , who hit a flush on the turn. Next one to leave was Sergey Shcherbatskiy, the Russian who got his entry with $7.5 steps qualifiers, who failed to hit an A with his against Joao Barbosa's pocket queens. Arnaud Mattern's hope of becoming the first 2-time EPT winner were shattered when he got very unlucky in two decisive hands. First he doubled up Atanas Gueorguiev who held A8 against AK, but an 8 came on the turn, and later he lost the rest of his stack again with a bad beat, losing pocket tens to Barbosa's pocket eights, with again an eight on the turn. Atanas Gueorguiev couldnt end the Portugese good run either. His didn't hold against Barbosa's because of the queen on the river and we were down to three.
At this point, Joao Barbosa held a commanding chiplead with 1.2 million against Nico Behling's 650k and Minieri's 300k stacks. A lot of action followed before we saw Minieri all-in for his decisive hand. After a standard raise from Barbosa, he shoves it in with pocket sevens. Barbosa however had pocket nines and no help from the board meant Dario Minieri was out in 3rd place, and we were down to two players, with Barbosa holding a 2:1 chiplead. A lot of hands with few showdowns follow and Barbosa's lead is expanding and when Nico Behling makes his final stand, his is looking pretty bad against Barbosa's . The board brings no help for the German, it's all over, which means Joao Barbosa wins his first EPT title and €367,141
