<img src="http://www.liquidpoker.net/staff/Pindarots/Oktober08/Darus_Suharto.jpg" align="right" style="margin:5px; border:1px solid black;">Most people say that reaching World Series of Poker Main Event final table changed their lives. If it is up to Darus Suharto, that is not really true for him. The Indonesian-born Suharto moved to North America to become an accountant. Poker was not really on his mind at the time, but about three years ago he started playing on a more regular basis after a friend started getting into it. When he first started to play online in 2005, he did not know anything about the WSOP. He got himself into the Main Event in 2006 and cashed $26,389 right away, but still, poker was not that big for him. He continued to play about 15 hours a week, only in weekends and kept having a 9 to 5 job as an accountant. Even in the months between reaching the final table and playing it, he'll be working as an accountant, even though he's guaranteed of at least $900,670 ! What he intends to do with that money? "Just to pay off my mortgage. Actually my poker objective was to pay off my mortgage. I was thinking when I got started that hopefully I could pay off my mortgage with my poker winnings. But now I have more than enough to pay off the mortgage."
Darus feels he's pretty much like the modern-day Chris Moneymaker, because both were accountants before their Main Event final table, both won their seats at a satellite (Darus won a $80 satellite into a $650 satellite to win a WSOP package at PokerStars) and both were still relatively inexperienced. He still thinks he’s a donkey when it comes to poker, from the looks of it. This WSOP Main Event is actually Darus' second big tournament (the first was his 2006 Main Event), apart from some small events at Caesars Palace.
Some people change a lot due to one big score, but it looks like 39 year-old Darus will always be himself, and as a friendly lucky donkey, his opponents respect that. We’ll see how this man fares at the World Series of Poker Main Event final table, starting with 12,520,000
