Another big event took place in London, after the WSOPE and EPT London Main Event, there was the EPT London £1m Showdown. The High-Roller event with a buy-in of £20,000 had a guaranteed prizepool of a million pounds! With 85 people who bought into the tournament, it even got bigger, a whopping £1,720,000 prizepool and over half a million pounds waiting for the winner.
With this high a buy-in, only the best of the best will be able to play (or the wealthiest of course) would play the event. Players like Erik Seidel, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Barry Greensein, Sorel Mizzi, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Patrik Antonius, Tom Dwan and 6 out of the November Nine. ElkY started on what they say was the "table of death" with players like Sorel Mizzi, Daniel Negreanu, Gus Hansen, William Thorson, Vicky Coren and Scott Fischman. With so much class on one table, there were bound to be many victims, and in fact, not a single player of that table made it to day 2! ElkY left the field going out QQ vs the AKs of Daniel Negreanu. Guess what? Yep, Ace on the River again... A lot of other pro's left the field and instead of the intended 8 players, we were down to 14 at the end of the day. David Benyamine was the chipleader.
With the 14 players, we would have to play down to the final 9 for the official final table. As shortstacks got knocked out, our bubble-boy was Dennis Philips, another one of the November Nine to finish deep in a big event, but unfortunately for him, only the top 9 got paid.
The final table:
Seat 1 Peter Jetten $347,000
Seat 2 Michael Watson $104,000
Seat 3 Isaac Haxton $193,000
Seat 4 Isabelle Mercier $86,000
Seat 5 David Benyamine $175,000
Seat 6 Scotty Nguyen $68,000
Seat 7 Jason Mercier $204,000
Seat 8 Masaaki Kagawa $142,000
Seat 9 John Juanda $302,000
With two Mercier's still in the running, the odds of one of them winning the event were pretty high, and when Michael "SirWatts" Watson got knocked out in 3rd place, Jason Mercier and John Juanda were still alive. For John Juanda this must be a great week, after winning the 22-hour WSOPE Main Event final table last friday, he starts the heads-up with a 2.2 : 1 chip advantage. Mercier needed some help from the pokergods when they got all-in on the very first hand, Mercier holding against the of Juanda. The flop scared him a bit, but the on the turn ment Juanda had to dodge only one last card to win 2 big events in one week. Unfortunately for Juanda, the on the river gave Mercier the pot and the chiplead. Mercier continued to run good when he flopped a full house not much later and in the final hand, Juanda is ahead with his to Mercier's . However, with a flop, there was nothing left to hope for, and 2 blanks on turn and river made sure the 21-year-old Jason Mercier wins £516,000 ! (just over a million dollar!) Juanda has to settle with £327,000, but with the knowledge he earned about 2.3 million dollars in a week time!
