It just wasn’t meant to be. Peachy, aka Eric Liu, dominated the table for a long time, but ran out of luck and was eventually eliminated at the final day of the EPT London. Michael “Martine23” Martin, the champion, had a sick day. He went from “dead” to chip leader in less than 20 minutes in a night he will never forget. Let’s take a look at how the day started:
Seat 1: Eric Liu 1,308,000
Seat 2: Johannes Strassmann 434,000
Seat 3: Philippe D'Auteuil 476,000
Seat 4: Antony Lellouche 1,022,000
Seat 5: Michael Tureniec 1,331,000
Seat 6: Alan Smurfit 396,000
Seat 7: Marcin Horecki 309,000
Seat 8: Michael Martin 718,000
Peachy Era
As we can see, Eric started close to the chip lead, and once his stack became considerably bigger than the ones of the other guys, he started making constant pre flop raises and 3bets that were uncalled, steadily chipping up his stack. The first finalist to go home was Anthony Lellouche, who had a sizable stack, but suffered a couple of tough hits early in the day that left him crippled. He was busto by Johannes Strassmann, aka ToT)Psier(, with A-9 vs K-J (K on the flop) and took home £81,569. A while after that, the same Strassmann was eliminated by the american Michael Martin. He left the tournament in 7th place with a prize of £120,723. Alan Smurfit and Philippe D’Auteuil were the next to go home, separated by around 20 min. They finished in 6th and 5th place respectively.
The table became four-handed and things became increasingly interesting. By then Peachy held over half of the chips in play, and it all looked easy for him, as he was ‘the’ dominant player of the table. That’s when things started to go wrong for Eric though. First the polish hero Marcin Horecki doubled up through him. Yeah, he is the guy who was saved by running nines in the infamous Q9 vs AA hand on Day 3. Once again Horecki found a way to come back from behind, as he was dominated with against the held by Peachy. Horecki hit the king he needed on the flop and became the chip leader, with 2.16 million chips, 150,000 more than Peachy. The players took a break, and a few hands after the return Eric was crippled by Michael Tureniec, A6 vs AA, ouch. Eric was left with around 500k chips.
The Resurrection
Meanwhile the champ, Michael Martin, was struggling with 100,000 chips. However in poker things switch very fast, and in pretty much 3 hands, Martin tripled up and doubled up twice, catapulting himself from 100k to nearly 1.5 million chips in pretty much ten minutes! Martin was on a roll and not much after that he eliminated Peachy. Michael was holding A-9 and picked up two more Aces on the board, more than enough to beat Eric’s straight draw. Peachy was eliminated in 4th place for an official prize of £234,920. Those four remaining players had a four-handed deal though, so this is not Eric’s real prize.
Michael Martin continued to roll, and Marcin Horecki was the next victim. Horecki moved all in from the button and Martin called from the small blind, having him covered. Horecki showed while Martin turned up . The flop was a brick, but the turn was an Eight, indicating Horecki would pull another suckout. The river was a Jack though, and Horecki was finally sent to the rail, with £303,439 in the bag.
The heads-up
The heads-up started with Michael Martin having a 4 to 1 chip lead over Michael Tureniec. Martin controlled the heads-up very well, and despite briefly losing the lead, he was never really in danger. In the final hand, Martin moved all in from the small blind and Tureniec called. Martin was holding a pair of Fours, while Tureniec held K-9. The fours made a set on the turn and gave Michael Martin the title and the winners prize of One Million Pounds. Michael Tureniec was eliminated in second place and earned £525,314.
