I remember reading about that being a significant problem for poker sites years ago, and that they were actually paying out a significant amount of ransom because not paying was incredibly costly.. especially russian hacker networks used to do this.
Of course there was never like, confirmation regarding how much they paid out or whatever, but poker sites being victim to ddos attacks for this reason has been a recurring problem for more than 5 years, and seeing how much money the big sites make, I certainly wouldn't be surprised to hear of them just paying $10k rather than losing $100k from the site being down for 6 hours. |

That's pretty sick. My thinking process was very simple - you don't usually fuck with people who might be heavily connected to politicians and can pay lawyers endlessly. But yeah who knows how much money good hackers can do, and who knows how safe is to try to scam big companies. |

I think it basically depends on where you are from. If you're an american (and I'd definitely include canada, UK, most of western europe here), you definitely don't wanna do this to a company operating in or registered in the US, but some eastern european/russian hacker collective is really, really unlikely to be hurt by any extention of the american judicial branch. I'm no technical expert at all, but I remember the first time I read about this was a loong time ago, and when I googled right before writing that previous post, I saw a lot of recent articles about the problem as well. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to find that mostly every network at some point has paid off hackers, if they just ask for a small enough amount of money compared to what they would lose from the downtime (which can still be a lot of money, especially to people from outside the west), then it just.. makes sense that they would. Also makes sense that both parties would want to keep this as secret as possible, as both poker networks and hackers who actually do get paid off would stand to lose by more hackers starting to do the same thing. |

Yes cause russian hackers give a fuck about politicians and lawyers other than Putin, gl doing something to them unless you're like a billionaire or in the board of directors in Gazprom
Eastern european hackers could potentially get hurt cause countries are mostly USA's bitch and the prosecution might be pushed into doing their job |
