This wasn't really a surprise: Daniel Negreanu became nominated for the addition to the Poker Hall of Fame the very first year he was eligible. Now, the final ten nominees have been selected by the Poker Hall of Fame Governing Council after player votes. The ten finalist besides Negreanu are Chris Bjorin, Humberto Brenes, Bruno Fitoussi, Ted Forrest, Jen Harman, Bob Hooks, Mike Matusow, Jack McClelland and Huckleberry Seed.

Daniel is obviously the strongest competitor for the addition to the list: he has six World Series of Poker championship bracelets, two World Poker Tour champion titles and almost $30,000,000 in career tournament earnings alone (being the highest earning player in the world). It is also impossible to argue that Negreanu has been a great ambassador for the game.

However, Negreanu is known for openly voicing his concerns, and this time he was a bit critical about the criteria for nominations:
“So the WSOP recently released its ten nominees for induction into the Poker Hall of Fame. The process for this appears to be a combination of a fan vote, with some additions where necessary. Bob Hooks (Hooks’) name is on the list and I can’t imagine he was voted in by the fans…I’m embarrassed to say that, while I’ve heard the name before, I have no idea who he is or what his accomplishments are.

(There are) plenty of great and likely deserving players not on this list,” he writes. “Too many to mention, but a few highlights would include players like Gus Hansen, John Juanda and Carlos Mortensen. It is surprising to…not see these names on the ballot in 2014.
Should someone who is 75 years old, no longer at their peak or even playing, trump the credentials of someone 45 years old who has been in the game for, say, 20 odd years?"
Negreanu goes on to compare Chris Bjorin (who has been on the nominated list for three consecutive years) to John Juanda: “Juanda’s tournament results are better, he’s played the highest stakes cash games in the world and has the respect of his peers…I want to be clear that (Bjorin) is a fantastic player that meets much of the criteria, but I think Juanda is even more qualified. Bjorin is 66, Juanda is just 43…should that matter? Personally, I think absolutely not.”

But a few highlights would include players like Gus Hansen

Argument loses a lot of credibility here

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us and as we let our own lights shine we unconsciously give other people permision to do the same

why?

everyone else mentioned in the article including Negreanu would probably lose more than Gus if they put in his volume at online nosebleeds

Publicity. Popularity and wider awareness of the game. More fish. The whole industry exists for one reason.

Researchers used brain scans to show that when straight men looked at pictures of women in bikinis, areas of the brain that normally light up in anticipation of using tools, like spanners and screwdrivers, were activated.
