TV presenter, writer and poker professional Victoria Coren Mitchell made history today by becoming the European Poker Tour’s first ever double champion when she won EPT Sanremo for €476,100.

Coren Mitchell, who is sponsored by PokerStars, is already a huge star in Britain thanks to her regular TV appearances and newspaper columns, and was the first woman to win an EPT event when she took down EPT London for £500,000 in 2006.

After her win tonight, which took place in the beautiful theatre at Casino Sanremo in Italy, Coren Mitchell said she had had no expectations of winning the event. She went in to today’s final with the fewest chips but carved her way to victory as player after player fell by the wayside.

After eliminating American PokerStars qualifier Jordan Westmorland in third place, she found herself heads-up against Italian pro Giacomo Fundaro whom she vanquished in less than 15 minutes.

Afterwards, she said: “I’m a natural pessimist. I never expect to win. My policy has always been to be happy with a profit and – most importantly - to enjoy myself. It hasn’t really sunk in yet but I’m incredibly grateful that so many people have got behind this.”

The victory came on the 98th event of the tour, which has played out across Europe for ten seasons. It was also watched by hundreds of thousands of viewers around the world on a live internet stream, as well as by Coren Mitchell’s 250,000+ followers on Twitter.

Coren Mitchell’s husband David – a well-known British comedian and writer - was watching the live stream from the couple’s hotel room but came rushing to the casino to embrace his wife after her win.

Final eight payouts:
1, Victoria Coren Mitchell, UK, Team PokerStars Pro, € 476,100
2, Giacomo Fundaro, Italy, € 298,700
3, Jordan Westmorland, USA, PokerStars qualifier, € 213,850
4, Andrea Benelli, Italy, € 166,700
5, Andreas Goeller, Italy, € 130,750
6, Bruno Stefanelli, Italy, Live satellite winner, € 102,700
7, Andrija Martic, Croatia, PokerStars player, € 76,650
8, Emmanuel Pariset, France, € 53,100

EPT President Edgar Stuchley said: “The first two-time EPT champion is a huge milestone in the history of the tour - and we are also very excited and proud that the challenge was won by a member of Team PokerStars Pro.”

There were 5,336 entries at this season’s EPT Sanremo Poker Festival, which featured 43 events, and more than 1,300 players from 51 countries around the world. More than €7.1m was awarded in prizes including €265,000 to German pro Ole Schemion who won the €10k High Roller event earlier today. The €770 Italian Poker Tour Main Event, the debut event of the festival, was won by Italian Alessandro de Fenza for €105,600 while fellow Italian Gaetano Preite won the €2k IPT High Roller for €77,800.
