PokerStars is raising the stakes for high rollers as sponsor of the all-new ‘High Roller of the Year’ award for the European Poker Tour (EPT) Season 9, which will go to the player who accumulates the most points in Season 9 events with a 10K (€ / $ / £) buy-in or higher.
“High Stakes poker action is as exciting as any sport in the world and features the best players competing against each other and those with enough confidence and cash to take on poker’s elite players,” said Edgar Stuchly, President of EPT. “These high stakes tournaments provide high-drama, deep strategy and potentially life-changing rewards.”
EPT Season 9 will feature the most high roller events in EPT history, with 16 such events including three Super High Rollers (Barcelona, PCA and Monaco), two 25K events (PCA and Monaco) and 10K Reload tournaments at every EPT tour stop this year. There’s also the brand new 10K Championship Events for Season 9.
German high stakes poker pro Philipp Gruissem is the player to beat later this month in Spain’s largest-ever buy-in poker event: the European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller tournament, which opens the EPT festival on August 17.
Gruissem’s high roller performances in EPT8 provided the inspiration for the ‘High Roller of the Year’ award. Gruissem took home €1.4 million in high roller tournaments last season after making five final tables, and winning the £20,000 tournament in EPT London and the €10,000 event in EPT Barcelona.
EPT Barcelona Super High Roller
The first of the high roller events for players to start building up points for this new award is the €50,000 Super High Roller tournament, which kicks off on Friday, August 17 in Barcelona as part of the spectacular inaugural event of EPT Season 9. It is just one of four high roller events to take place during the 11-day Spanish poker festival, and with unlimited reloads on Day 1, players will be battling it out for an expected prize pool of more than €1.8 million.
The list of players confirmed to play in this historic tournament now stands at 37, with Team PokerStars Pros Daniel Negreanu and Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, who both ran close to Gruissem last season in terms of cashes and final tables, confirmed to play. Daniel said "I'm really excited to play in another High Roller event at my favourite EPT stop in Barcelona. I've had great success in high roller events and this season there will be an award for High Roller player of the year. I'll be shooting for that."
