Buddhist Monks caught in high stakes cash game scandal
Six leaders of a South Korean Buddhist Order have resigned after some footage showing them playing high stakes poker, drinking and smoking hit the web. The scandal has cast doubt on the future of the head of the Order. He made a public apology to all of South Korea's 12 million Buddhists after the video aired on on the Korean national TV. The monks played for 13 hours at a luxury lakeside hotel, where they gathered for a memorial event for a dead monk. Over $875,000 changed hands during the marathon, according to a senior monk who spoke with Reuters.
The video was recorded by a hidden surveillance camera in their hotel room. The Korean media is speculating about a power split within the order. The monk who called for investigation said he only did so because he believed the monks would not be punished unless the video was made public.
