i think this is played pretty bad on all streets barring maybe the tunr.

I think checking behind the flop is fine here sometimes. We'll get check-raised a lot on this flop by hands we're ahead of, but we won't be able to continue against them. We can then bet turn if checked to, or call a turn bet and make a decision on the river if bet into again.
